Photographers in the shadows have been actively followingVolkswagen prototypesrecently, but this could be the standout. They've spotted what seems to be a Tiguan R undergoing testing.
At first glance, the crossover doesn't seem very thrilling as it just looks like aTiguan R-Line. However, a more detailed look shows a few minor adjustments that suggest a high-performance version.

Very little is currently known about the Tiguan R, but the European R-Line 195 model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 262 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing the crossover to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 5.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h).
Customers can also choose a more powerful R-Line eHybrid variant, featuring a plug-in hybrid system that includes a 1.5-liter engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, a 19.7 kWh battery, and an electric motor. This setup provides a total power output of 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS), though the additional weight increases the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time to 7.2 seconds and reduces the top speed to 134 mph (215 km/h).
It is still uncertain what the complete Tiguan R will include, but it's likely safe to expect a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. If theGolf RThere is some indication that the crossover might produce approximately 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS). Naturally, only time will reveal the truth.
Could It Happen in America?
We wouldn't wager on it, at least not in the current form. The Tiguan sold in Europe is different from the version available in the US, even though they share the same name. In fact, the largerThe Tiguan available in the United States is sold as the Tayron in Europe. Its 316 hp (235 kW / 320 PS) predecessor was also available only in certain regions, which does not support the argument.
Volkswagen might also apply the same approach to the American model, but that would be a completely different discussion.
It remains uncertain if Americans would be open to paying $50,000 or more for a performance crossover from Volkswagen. However, the company already charges $49,455 for the Golf R, making this not entirely new, particularly as Toyota introduces the 324 hp plug-in hybrid RAV4 GR Sport.
