Porsche Holds 10,000-Electric Throne—Polestar's 884 HP Challenger Aims to Top It

Polestar has taken its most aggressive step yet in South Korea—and it's not holding back on its goal. The Swedish electric vehicle company claims it's moving past being "premium." It now aims to compete in the luxury segment, openly facing off against Porsche's top models. If you look at the competition list, it appears as a clear challenge: Polestar 4 versus Macan, Polestar 3 versus Cayenne.Electric, and the 884-horsepower Polestar 5 compared to the Taycan.
At its latest media event, Polestar didn't only introduce new vehicles—it introduced a change in perspective, highlighting the slogan Premium to Luxury as a core principle. This goes beyond simply increasing costs. The company claims it's enhancing product quality, brand image, and customer experience to meet the standards expected by those entering the six-figure market.
The data explains why Polestar believes it has a chance. Its average transaction price in South Korea last year was approximately 55,000 USD, and it topped imported EV sales above the 40,000 USD mark. This represents strong premium positioning—but luxury is another challenge entirely. Porsche sold over 10,000 units in Korea last year, driven largely by electric models and a brand reputation that cannot be bought with money alone.
So Polestar is launching attacks from various directions. Actor Kim Woo-bin has become the brand's representative, clearly intended to enhance its cultural appeal. A nationwidecharginggoal—400 chargers spread over 40 sites by 2030—and a unified owner app set to debut in February aim to create a personalized experience, rather than a simple transaction. Collaborations with Shinsegae and Samsung Card enhance the exclusive status concept.
Next is the hardware. The Polestar 3, set to launch in Q2, offers up to 517 horsepower and an estimated 395 miles of WLTP range, along with a 2025 European safety award. The Polestar 5, expected later this year, boosts performance to 884 horsepower, targeting the Taycan with a blend of long-distance comfort and sports-sedan agility. The target is 4,000 sales in South Korea this year, a rise of over 30%. The real question isn't if Polestar can create a high-performance EV. It's whether it can craft a luxury image powerful enough to attract customers away from Stuttgart.
