Audi's RS5 Makes a High-Performance Hybrid Return

Audi has introduced its latest RS5, which makes its debut on the road as a plug-in hybrid.

The earlier RS5 featured a turbocharged V6 engine, and although the latest version might incorporate electric technology, it still uses the same 2.9-liter engine as before.

Nevertheless, the V6 engine is now combined with a 130kW electric motor, resulting in 630bhp, which is a significant increase from the 450bhp offered by the earlier model.

Additionally, Audi states that the 22kWh battery included in the RS5 enables it to drive over 80 km using only electric power. It can also be charged at rates as high as 22kW, which means a full charge can be completed in two and a half hours.

Like all Audi RS models, the new RS5 features quattro all-wheel drive, along with a newly introduced Dynamic Torque Control system that can dynamically distribute power between the rear wheels to enhance handling.

The latest model will come in both saloon and Avant configurations, providing customers with options across the lineup.

From the outside, the new RS5 features a traditional sporty look with a long, smooth roof that ends in a sharp rear hatch. At the back, big oval exhaust pipes – a signature of Audi's RS models over the years – emphasize the vehicle's performance capabilities.

Inside, there are spacious bucket seats, and similar to the latest RS3, the steering wheel features quick-response buttons for drive modes. It appears that Audi has returned to more traditional controls on the steering wheel, replacing the haptic ones found in earlier models. Although the gear shift paddles behind the steering wheel enable drivers to manage the automatic transmission, they can also be used to modify the level of regenerative braking when operating in electric mode.

Audi has not yet announced the UK prices for the new RS5, but has mentioned that it will begin at €106,000 for the sedan and €107,850 for the Avant when it becomes available in Germany later this year.
