Own the Enzo Ferrari Peugeot 403 Sedan from the Ferrari Film
- This modest Peugeot car was featured in the latest Enzo Ferrari biographical film.
- It is realistic, as Enzo genuinely had a long-standing preference for Peugeots.
- This vehicle is in reliably collectible condition, and the movie history only enhances its charm.
Instead of being a high-octane racing film like 2013'sRush, Michael Mann's Ferrariis a gradual-paced biographical film that focuses more on the individual rather than his inventions. Nevertheless, it accurately captures the specifics, which is why when you first witness Enzo behind the wheel, he isn't operating an Alfa Romeo or one of his own iconic racing horses, but rather a modest French compact car.
Now, that very vehicle has just appeared on Bring a Trailer (which, similar to Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos):a 1956 Peugeot 403 that was featured on screen inFerrari. In contrast to the racing Maseratis and Ferraris featured in other parts of the film, this is one classic movie vehicle that is actually within reach financially. Additionally, it is authentic—Enzo genuinely owned multiple Peugeots.
The cause of Il Commentadore's preference for French automobiles has faded with the passage of time. Some speculate it began when his sister-in-law, who resided in France, arrived in Modena with her Peugeot. Additionally, there is an Italian link, as Peugeot models such as the 403 and 404 were created by Pininfarina, the design firm responsible for some of the most cherished Ferrari vehicles.
No matter the situation, old Enzo was a true Peugeot enthusiast. He had at least three of them, the first serving as daily vehicles, followed by 504s used as chauffeur-driven cars, all the way until his death in 1988. He also insisted on using Peugeot station wagons as support vehicles for the Scuderia racing team, which means there are pictures of white Pug wagons with partial F1 racer bodywork attached to the roof.
This vehicle is a modestly powered berlinetta from the mid-1950s with a restrained design. Essentially, this is what Peugeot excels at, in contrast to the bold and unconventional nature of Citroën. A Citroën is like Paris Fashion Week, while a Peugeot sedan is more akin to a French-accented Saville Row business suit—subtle and prepared for duty.
Simplicity reigns supreme in this car's Pininfarina sleek design and thoughtful use of chrome. Beneath the hood lies a 1468cc inline-four engine producing approximately 65 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a column-mounted gear shift. While this power output isn't particularly Ferrari-like, it offers sufficient performance when driven with the right French-Italian enthusiasm.
Speaking of that, this vehicle also features a rear-mounted hydraulic handbrake that can engage the rear wheels to add more flair to the in-game driving experience. This system would enable Adam Driver, who plays Enzo, to be behind the wheel while a concealed stunt driver pulls the handbrake.
This is an enjoyable and intriguing small vehicle that works well for a weekend trip around the city. The fact that it has movie car background adds an extra touch of appeal, particularly since Peugeot ownership unexpectedly played a long-standing role in the Enzo Ferrari story.
The sale concludes on February 18.
