Grey's Anatomy Pays Tribute to Eric Dane: A Lasting Legacy

The actors and team ofGrey's Anatomy are paying homage to Eric Dane.

Dane diedA Thursday afternoon following a struggle with ALS. He was 53 years old.

The actor was part of 10 seasons of the ABC medical series, in which he played plastic surgeon Mark Sloan, affectionately called "McSteamy." Dane took on the role from season two to season nine, the final one where Mark's character met his end. He had one more appearance onGrey's Anatomy'a for a cameo during the 17th season.

The series' creator, Shonda Rhimes, released a statement withThe Hollywood Reporteron behalf of Shondaland, stating, "Eric Dane was a cherished member of Shondaland and"Grey's Anatomyfamilies. He was genuinely a talented performer whose depiction of Dr. Mark Sloan made a lasting impression on the show and viewers globally.

We appreciate the creativity, passion, camaraderie, and kindness he offered us over the years," Rhimes added. "Our thoughts are with his family, those who cared for him, and everyone whose life was influenced by his work.

ABC and 20th Television issued a shared statement, which said, "We are profoundly heartbroken by the passing of Eric Dane. His exceptional skill and lasting impact onGrey's Anatomy Left a significant impression on viewers globally, and his bravery and dignity throughout his fight with ALS motivated countless individuals. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and coworkers, as well as the numerous fans whose lives were influenced by his contributions.

Kevin McKidd, who has been part of the series from season five to 22, playing Dr. Owen Hunt, posted on his Instagram Story, "Rest in Peace Buddy." James Pickens Jr., another long-time cast member ofGrey's Anatomy, also posted on his Instagram Story, "Rest in Peace."

Krista Vernoff, who has served as a producer on the show throughout its long run, shared images of her text conversations with Dane, in which they talked about his 2021Grey's Anatomy cameo.

I called Eric and he picked up right away. I asked, "Will you come back?" I know it's a pandemic and shooting is a challenge, but we're going to do it on the beach while maintaining our social distance because the world needs happiness, and Mark and Lexie represent joy," she wrote onInstagramHe mentioned the place and time. When I arrived on that day, he said, 'we're breaking the rules and hugging now, right?'

Vernoff ended her message with, "What I will remember most about Eric Dane are his hugs. The best hugs. Oh my friend. I wish you peace."

Kim Raver, Dr. Teddy Altman inGrey's Anatomy, wrote a touching tribute on Instagram along with pictures of Dane, stating, "Eric was a light. You could easily see it shining from him on the set of Grey's as well as when he was with Rebecca and the children. While working, he would have a glint in his eye and a playful expression, delivering lines with impeccable comedic timing that would amaze you! You will be deeply missed."

Sarah Drew, who portrayed Dr. April Kepner from 2009 to 2022, shared a collection of posts celebrating Dane on her Instagram Stories on Friday. She also added, "Heartbroken over this huge loss. Eric was an amazing actor and a remarkable person, and he will be deeply missed. Sending lots of love to his family."
