Major Crackdown: Bangalore Transport Dept Files 260 Cases, Seizes 98 Autos Over Overcharging

The transportation authorities in Karnataka initiated an extensive crackdown on Monday aimed at auto-rickshaw drivers who lack valid licenses or charge excessive rates. According to reports from the news agency PTI, this action led to the filing of 260 legal complaints and the removal of 98 vehicles from service.

This critical action comes after instructions from Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who has recently asked transportation officers to enforce stricter measures against taxi drivers—particularly those linked to ride-sharing applications—who have not followed official pricing rules. In an order released on June 28, the minister labeled the excessive charging as "open-air theft" and demanded the revocation of licenses for violators.

The operation started at dawn on June 30 and targeted both unlawful activities and ticketing infractions, according to a representative from the department. For the inspections, officials established 22 specialized units, with two groups allocated to every local transportation office throughout the city.

The move follows increasing dissatisfaction from travelers, who have complained about excessive pricing. According to official rules, the base rate for auto-rickshaws in Bangalore is ₹30 for the initial 1.9 kilometers, plus an extra ₹15 for each subsequent kilometer.

Nevertheless, taxi ride costs in Bangalore are expected to rise for the first time since 2021, following approval from the state government for an overdue adjustment. According to the updated pricing, passengers will be charged ₹36 for the initial 1.9 kilometers, compared to the previous ₹30, and ₹18 for each extra kilometer, as opposed to the present rate of ₹15.
