Law Enforcement Warn Drivers About New Super Speeding Law as "Southern Slow Down" Launches

With the start of Operation Southern Slow Down, you'll notice more police officers patrolling Florida's roadways.

This approach allows state and local organizations to collaborate and promote safer driving habits, encouraging motorists to decrease their speeds, which can help prevent fatal accidents. Police departments throughout the state are reminding drivers to adhere to posted speed limits on major roads, freeways, and local streets.

"Speeding leads to nothing positive. Drivers should make wiser decisions to decrease accidents," stated Orange City Police Chief Wayne Miller.

Members of the Florida Highway Patrol and local police departments are increasing their focus on enforcing speed limits. In the last two decades, authorities believe that speeding has played a role in roughly one-third of fatal accidents within the state.

The count of fatal accidents dropped in 2023 when measured against 2022, yet law enforcement officials state this improvement remains insufficient.

"there were 437 deaths, along with 1,245 severe injuries. that's far too high. one is excessive. however, upon examining the numbers, our aim is for this pattern to decrease and ideally reach zero," stated Lieutenant Tara Crescenzi.

This year, as part of Operation Southern Slow Down, the state implemented a revised traffic regulation that increases punishments for drivers who exceed speed limits significantly.

"If you're stopped for driving 50 miles per hour above the posted speed limit or at least 100 mph and you're causing disruption to traffic, you could face imprisonment," stated Lieutenant Crescenzi.

Police will not hold back from sending reckless speeding drivers to prison. This week, as part of the initiative, they will also focus on confrontational motorists.
