Researchers Stunned by Tesla Battery Breakdown: 'We Were Surprised'

Researchers investigating electric vehicle (EV) technology uncovered an unexpected finding when they disassembled a battery from Tesla and another from BYD. This examination provided valuable insights into current EV battery technology and potential implications for the next generation of batteries.

A study published in Cell Reports Physical Science, as reported by ZME Science, compared the Tesla battery with the BYD battery. These two companies are leading players in the EV market. The lead author of the study, Jonas Gorsch, expressed surprise at this discovery in a news release. "We were surprised to find no silicon content in the anodes of either cell, especially in Tesla's cell, as silicon is widely regarded in research as a key material for increasing energy density," he said.

Each battery has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. While the Tesla battery may be more expensive to produce, it is better suited for high-performance and luxury vehicles. However, its design can lead to increased heat buildup, which might cause issues with fast charging and reduce the battery’s lifespan.

On the other hand, the BYD lithium iron phosphate battery is more resistant to thermal runaway, making it safer. The researchers noted that its features make it ideal for mass-market and affordable EV models.
