Vonn's Latest Surgery 'Went Well,' Paves Way for U.S. Return

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy -- Lindsey Vonn's recent operation on her left leg, which she injured during the Olympic downhill, was successful, and she "will now be able to return to the US,"the prominent American skier stated Saturday.
Vonn, 41 years old, is receiving medical care at a hospital in Treviso.
She crashed 13 seconds into her run at last Sunday's event and was transported from the track by helicopter. On Monday, she mentioned that she had experienced a "complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will need several surgeries to repair correctly."
She mentioned on Wednesday that her third operation was "successful."
Nine days prior to Sunday's accident, Vonn suffered a torn ACL in her left knee during a different crash. Before that, she had already captured everyone's attention as the inspiring athlete making a return to the Olympics after nearly six years away from the sport.
I've been reading many messages and comments expressing that what has happened to me makes them sad," Vonn stated on Instagram. "Please, don't feel sad. I truly appreciate empathy, love, and support, but I ask that you not show sadness or pity. I hope this inspires you to find strength and continue fighting, as that's exactly what I'm doing and will keep doing. Always.
When I reflect on my accident, I wasn't at the starting line without understanding the possible outcomes. I was fully aware of my actions. I decided to take a chance.
Alan Kildow, Vonn's father, stated to The Associated Press on Monday that his daughter will stop racing if he has any say in her choice.
But Vonn ended her most recent message by stating that she is "still looking forward to the moment when I can stand on the top of the mountain once again. And I will."
