The Silent Passenger Glitch: Android Auto Mutes the Wrong Drivers

If you've ever experienced your phone going silent in the passenger seat simply because the car started moving, Google has finally resolved that issue. The latest update to Android Auto's Do Not Disturb feature now only affects the driver's device—no longer everyone in the car.

Earlier, the feature depended mainly on motion detection. This meant that if you were sitting in the front passenger seat or in the back, your notifications might still be blocked because the phone detected movement. The latest update brings back Bluetooth-based activation, so Do Not Disturb activates when the device connects to the car's dashboard—not only when it detects you're moving.

The update is available with Google Play Services version 26.05.32 or higher. On Pixel devices, users can access the setting through Settings > Modes and Routines > Driving Mode, where they can switch on Bluetooth-based activation. Samsung phones take an additional step by confirming that the phone is genuinely connected to the Android Auto head unit before activating the feature, ensuring greater accuracy.

The real-world effect is straightforward yet significant. Drivers experience less interruption from alerts and notifications, while passengers maintain complete access to their messages. It's a minor software adjustment that addresses an unexpectedly frequent annoyance for families, daily commuters, and those using ride-sharing services.

Although Android 17 is anticipated to deliver wider system enhancements later this year, Google has not revealed significant new features for Android Auto. For the time being, this update focuses more on refining the basics—ensuring drivers stay attentive without inconveniencing others in the vehicle.
