The lawsuit was submitted in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging that the sneaker brand has been utilizing the "1587" trademark since April 2023, long before the restaurant commenced operations in September 2025.

The storyline becomes more complex as 1587 Prime is not only a dining establishment but also offers apparel and products under the same numerical brand. This has led to a "red zone" of misunderstanding among customers, who have incorrectly reached out to 1587 Sneakers believing there is a link to Mahomes and Kelce's eatery.

The circumstances become even more complicated as both companies have filed for trademark registrations in separate categories. While 1587 Prime is seeking protection within the bar and restaurant industry since December 2023, 1587 Sneakers did so in October 2025 for the clothing sector. This variation in timing and category has resulted in a complicated legal landscape.

Prior to going to court, in 1587 Sneakers attempted to settle the issue peacefully by sending "cease and desist" letters to the restaurant proprietors. Nevertheless, these attempts did not succeed, prompting the shoe company to request a legal order to halt the ongoing use of the brand, along with a "seizure" of profits and higher penalties.

       

Trademark specialists note that although brands can exist side by side in different sectors, the closeness between a shoe company and a restaurant offering apparel with the identical numerical brand might lead to consumer confusion.
