Lindsey Vonn Faces More Surgeries After Olympic Crash, Calls It 'A Hard Few Days'
(NEXSTAR) – Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn is set to have another surgery — and possibly more — to address the fractured tibia she suffered after crashing during a downhill race on Sunday.
Vonn, 41, shared the information on her own on Friday, inan Instagram videotaken from her hospital bed in Treviso, Italy.
Hey everyone, I just wanted to share a quick update and say a huge thank you to all of you who have been sending me flowers, letters, and sharks," she said, pointing to a stuffed shark she had placed under her head. "It's been absolutely incredible and has really helped me a lot.
Vonn mentioned that the past few days in the hospital had been "quite difficult," as she had already undergone three operations by Wednesday.
On Saturday, Vonn mentioned that she had another surgery planned.
And hopefully it goes smoothly, and I might be able to leave and return home, after which I'll need another operation," she shared. "I still aren't sure exactly what that involves until I get more detailed scans.
I'm currently in the hospital, unable to move much, but I've had many friends and family members coming to see me," Vonn added. "And as I mentioned, the letters, notes, and flowers have been truly amazing.
Nine days prior to her accident at the Olympics, Vonn tore her left ACL during a different crash at a World Cup event in Switzerland, which necessitated her being transported by air from the mountain. She managed to complete a qualifying run at the Olympics just a few days later, but crashed on Sunday just 13 seconds into her run. Following the incident, she revealed she had sustained a "complex tibia fracture" that would need "multiple surgeries to repair correctly."
Since that time, Vonn mentioned she has been observing her fellow athletes at the Winter Olympics.
I feel very lucky and grateful to have so many people nearby who have truly supported me through this, so I just wanted to say thanks and go Team USA," Vonn said. "It's amazing to watch and really boosted my mood. Great job, team, and keep pushing forward. I'll check in with you all when I can.
