Helicopters and Sweepers: Police Prepare for Mardi Gras in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Law enforcement groups from throughout the area arrived at Ladd-Peebles Stadium today for the third day ofintensive trainingmeant to acclimate mounted units to the sensory intensity of Mobile's approaching Mardi Gras celebration.

The program aims to familiarize horses and their riders with the controlled disorder they will encounter when thousands of people fill the downtown streets. Helicopters fly above, loud noises echo through the stadium, and lights flash—everything is part of the process to help these animals stay relaxed and focused when it's most important.

As Mardi Gras draws near, the pressure is intense. Police on horseback will soon be seen in downtown Mobile, traveling along parade paths while pushing through large groups of people. There's no space for fear or erratic actions.

What stands out about the training is the involvement of volunteers. Over half of the participants are individuals from law enforcement agencies in the area, who have joined not only because of their responsibilities but also to acquire this specific expertise.

The riders need to remain calm—keep your heart rates under control," said Megan McPherson, a senior trainer with the Morgan County Sheriff's Office. "Horses can sense your heart rate from four feet away. If you become tense or nervous, they will too. When you stay relaxed and give them room, they will follow suit. Use clear, brief commands and they will obey.

As per McPherson, the success of the operation relies on the connection between the horse and its rider. It's not about strength or control—it's about trust, interaction, and emotional sensitivity.

As Mardi Gras approaches, authorities have a reminder for those joining the parades: show respect to the mounted units. These officers and their horses are dedicated to ensuring your safety, and they can only perform their duties properly with adequate space and understanding. Training will remain ongoing in the days ahead as agencies get ready for what is expected to be one of Mobile's most hectic seasons.
