A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist James' family with "essential living costs" following his passing.

It has now come to light that the actor earned "almost nothing" financially after a "poor" contract for Dawson's Creek left him without income from the show's reruns. Dawson's Creek aired for six seasons on the WB Network from 1998 to 2003.

James shared that he didn't gain any financial benefits from subsequent reruns or streaming agreements. "There was no residual income," he mentioned to Today in 2012. "I was 20. It was a poor contract. I received almost nothing from it."

Broadway performer Donna Vivino shared a post on Instagram to support James' widow, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and the family's GoFundMe campaign.

"For those criticizing James Van Der Beek's wife for having a [GoFundMe], may I present some FACTS," theWickedalum posted on February 13.

1. They do not possess the farm where they reside, they are leasing it. 2. He was not sustaining himself through royalties.

Vivino pointed out James' earlier comments regarding his absence of residuals and how he sold memorabilia to support cancer patients. She also mentioned, "cancer treatment is 'effin expensive even WITH insurance."

"Not every situation is as it appears on the internet. A bit of background can make a significant difference," she mentioned.

Star of The Real Housewives of Orange CountyBraunwyn Windham-Burke responded to a social media post from Donna Vivino that described her situation of having to cover the costs of medical care.

"Our family is struggling under the weight of medical bills due to my dad's cancer, my parents saved money, worked hard, and had a good retirement... everything is gone," the reality TV personality wrote.

At the peak of its popularity, it was reported that James and his co-stars—Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams—earned up to $175,000 per episode in the last season. James received numerous job offers following the show's success, appearing in movies such as Varsity Blues and Texas Ranges. However, he had to take a break from acting after finishing filming for Dawson’s Creek due to exhaustion.

Soon, the offers ceased. He told Variety, "I was really scared to agree to anything. I was also exhausted and needed a break, so I declined many opportunities because they didn't seem like things I truly wanted to do, or things I didn't want to support."

They mentioned it had become increasingly difficult to see the actor's decline. "He was in a hospice, they held his hand and were present for him, naturally," they stated.

But it has been difficult because James was very sick, he was weak. He had a lot of charm, he was a wonderful person, and his presence is greatly missed. Those poor little children.

James is the father of six children: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four, along with his wife, Kimberly. The family had been residing on a ranch close to Austin, Texas, since choosing to move away from Los Angeles in 2020.
