Hilary Duff's Emotional Ballad "We Don't Talk" Reveals Sibling Struggles

Hilary Duffhas officially returned to the pop music scene with the launch of her latest album, luck…or something. This signifies the "Mature" hitmaker's first complete album sinceBreathe In. Breathe Out. in 2015, and this time, she's sharing her genuine perspective through songs such as "Roommates" and "The Optimist."

Fans were particularly surprised by the album's third song, "We Don't Talk," which they believed could be referencing her separated sister,Haylie Duff, when Hilary first premiered during her series of Small Rooms, Big Nerves shows earlier this year. "Because we come from the same home, the same blood / A different combination, but the same lock / People ask me how you're doing, I want to say amazing / But the truth is that I don't know," she reflects in the song's lyrics.

During a discussion with Anthony Mason forCBS Mornings, Hilary confirmed that the song was partially inspired by her broken relationship with her sister, with whom she appeared on screen in 2006’sMaterial Girls.

"It's definitely about my sister. And, just, the most lonely aspect of my life right now is not having my sister with me. I really had a hard time considering including that on the album," Hilary said, her eyes filling with tears.

A former Disney employee also mentioned that although the choice was challenging, she opted to speak openly about her experiences to support others going through comparable situations.

It's amusing how someone can exist in the world without their other half, and many people are going through this. A lot of my discussions with others go like, 'Me too, me too, me too,' " Hilary said, later adding, "It's challenging because I am who I am, and people know everything about my life since I was a child, you know? I didn't really choose that aspect, but it's part of my reality.

She then apparently referenced the reported mother group conflict that erupted afterAshley Tisdalewrote a harsh personal essay forThe Cut last month, which garnered support from Haylie on Instagram.

It was genuinely therapeutic to acknowledge that it's challenging to see your life playing out online, with TikTok commentators making guesses about this, that, and everything else, and sometimes they're incorrect and sometimes they're accurate," Hilary said. "I just try to, more and more, prevent that noise from affecting me. But obviously, it's present... It would be impossible to deny that it occasionally annoys or hurts me.

When asked if she hopes Haylie will hear the song, Hilary said, "I don't think that would be helpful. I believe I need to simply be myself and pursue what I want to do."

She later said, "I don't know if she'll hear it. I don't know how she'll respond to it. But, you know, it's a very personal aspect of my life that can't remain private anymore. So I might as well express how it has been for me, and that's all I'm aiming to do. I'm not trying to say anything negative. It's simply my experience, and that's really all I feel comfortable sharing."

Hilary and Haylie Duff have not been seen together in photos since 2019, and the singer-songwriter's new album was released the day following her separated sister's birthday, according toPage Six.
