Electric Audi TT Replacement Confirmed as Porsche 718 EV Stalls
Porsche and its sister company Audi both intended to introduce an electric sports car constructed on the same fundamental platform in the near future. Porsche's versionmay be canceledas part of a budget reduction initiative, but Audi continues to focus on achieving profitabilitythe Concept C(pictured) into a production electric vehicle in the coming years.
The platform's delivery by Porsche is not up for debate, wroteAudi's CEO Gernot Döllner wrote an internal message to the company's staff. He mentioned that there is a "positive partnership" between Porsche and Audi. The letter remained confidential, but it is said to have been disclosed to a German newspaper.Donaukurier.
Known as PPE Sport internally, the platform was created mainly for the electric versions of the 718 Cayman and718 Boxster. It is somewhat connected to the PPE platform located underthe electric Macan, among other electric vehicles, but the battery pack has significantly shifted from beneath the passenger area to behind the seats in order to create a lower seating position. This allowed Audi to utilize it for the Concept C, which was developed as a successor tothe TT, should enable both companies to benefit from the advantages of increased scale.
Looking between the lines implies that the Porsche 718 EV might not be canceled. It is nearer to production than the Concept C; development has been underway for several years, and we have seentesting of prototypes on many occasions, and the confirmation of Concept C indicates that its platform is progressing. Viewed in this way, it might be logical for Porsche to introduce the vehicle and sell as many as possible.
Could Audi assume control of the project if Porsche chooses not to proceed? It is theoretically possible, but it would depend on the agreements established between the two companies (as well as the decisions made by Volkswagen's senior leadership).
What appears to be certain is that the next 718 will not be exclusively electric as originally planned. Even if the EV manages to reach the end of a production line, the platformis being re-engineeredto support gas-powered versions. Modifying the PPE Sport platform to accommodate a hybrid system has been dismissed, however. Additionally, it remains unclear if Audi will adopt Porsche's approach and provide the Concept C with gasoline engines.
Audi intends to unveil the production version of the Concept C in 2027. The coupe is expected to significantly impact the brand's lineup: It will be the first vehicle introduced under the direction of Massimo Frascella, Audi's new design chief, and it willusher ina fresh, more refined design approach for the German company.
