Detroit auto sector escapes Trump's latest tariff plan

() --

Detroit's car manufacturers found out on Friday evening that they had avoided tariffs that President Donald Trump implemented following the US Supreme Court's decision to invalidate most of his international duties.

On Friday evening, Trump implemented a 10% flat tax on imported goods, which will come into effect on Tuesday. However, according to a fact sheet, the White House confirmed that passenger vehicles and specific trucks and automotive parts would be exempt from this tax.

The American Automotive Policy Council, which includes General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., and Stellantis NV, the parent company of Jeep, sent a letter to Trump's trade advisors on Friday in an effort to maintain a structure that shields them from facing multiple import taxes on vehicles and components, as reported by an individual acquainted with the situation, who requested anonymity when talking about the confidential message.

Automakers are facing billions of dollarsin additional expenses resulting from Trump's tariffs, especially those imposed on imported vehicles and automotive components.

These tariffs, along with taxes on steel and aluminum, were introduced under a law that allows the president to levy import duties based on national security concerns. The charges remained in effect despite the Supreme Court's decision that invalidated Trump's wider import taxes on numerous nations.

The president signed a pair of directiveslast April, which lessened the effect of his tariffs on the automobile sector, partly by stopping several taxes from stacking on one another.
