A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Trial of Seven Was Epic, But Something Was Missing

Warning: contains spoilers for "In the Name of the Mother".

Despite Game of Thrones' controversial finale, fans have made their way back to Westeros through various spinoffs now available on HBO (and streaming with anHBO Max subscription). The most recent one of these isA Knight from the Seven Kingdoms, which has been annoying fansand defying their expectations because of its disrespectful tone and crude humor. The second-to-last episode included an impressive Trial of the Seven, but it lacked one essential component of the series.

Immediately after its premiere, AKotSK joined the ranks of HBO series that sparked global conversation, largely due to how distinct it was from its predecessors. TheGame of ThronesThe universe was utilized in a comedic manner, and the show has featured numerous poop jokes and outrageous nudity so far. Unfortunately, that was what was lacking in Episode 5.

"Calling the Mother" Was Exciting, But Lost the Show's Humorous Atmosphere

The drama of A Knight of the Seven Kingdomswas leading up to "In the Name of the Mother," where Duncan and his diverse group of Knights became entangled in a perilous Trial of the Seven. The episode alternated between intense medieval battles and flashbacks depicting Dunk's upbringing in Flea Bottom. It was an outstanding episode of television, but I would have appreciated a few comedic moments to reflect the show's characteristic irreverence.

Clearly, this is simpler to say than to accomplish. However, perhaps it could have been implemented in the flashback scenes. This would have maintained the Trial's intense stakes, while also allowing the show to maintain a consistent tone. I mean, I'm certain I'm not the only fan who grew fond of the prequel for this very reason.

I'm curious to find out what kind of tone the upcomingA Knight of the Seven KingdomsThe season finale will feature. The pressure remains intense for Dunk, who is now partially to blame for the death of Baelor Targaryen. Will the last episode of Season 1 include humor and toilet jokes similar to most of the series, or will the show start to take a more serious tone?Game of Thrones and House of the DragonI have a clear idea of what I would prefer.

At the moment of composing this narrative,A Knight of the Seven Kingdomshasn't been extended for another season at the moment. However, the showrunnerIra Parker wishes to keep telling the story of Dunk and Egg.until the end of those characters' lives. The challenge will be maintaining the humor from the first season, while also letting the broader narrative unfold. Let's hope we hear about another season soon rather than later.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsnew episodes air on Sundays on HBO as part of the2026 TV schedule. Fortunately for fans of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragonwill start broadcasting its third season this June. Long live Westeros!
