3 Aging Eyeshadow Mistakes Women Over 50 Must Avoid

When it comes to makeup for those over 50, the method used becomes increasingly important. The skin's texture can change, and the eyelids might become hooded or more deeply set, while applying too much product can accidentally highlight the very aspects you aim to minimize.
That’s why over-50 makeup educator Kimidentifying the three most common eyeshadow errors observed on aging eyes — and offering solutions to achieve a more youthful, radiant appearance.
Here's what she advises against.
1. Positioning Dark Shadow Precisely In The Crease
If you have eyes that are deeply set or hooded, using a dark color directly in the crease might give the appearance of more sunken eyes.
"Using a very dark shade and applying it directly into the crease... just makes the deep crease more noticeable, and you can't even see the color," she explains.
Alternatively, she suggests maintaining focus by looking directly into a mirror. Apply a neutral transition color and position it just above the natural eyelid crease, rather than within it. This gives the appearance of a higher, morelifted eye shape.
To achieve a more lifted effect, slowly spread the color outward toward the outer corner instead of focusing the pigment in the middle of the eyelid.
2. Blocking the Eyes with Aggressive Eyeliner
Another frequent error is applying eyeliner from the outer corner to the inner corner on both the upper and lower lash lines.
This method can cause the eyes to look smaller and more subdued — particularly on older eyelids. Instead, Cam recommends creating a more relaxed appearance:
- Increase focus on the outer corner for a lifting effect
- Ensure the lower eyelash line aligns with the upper eyelash line at the outer corner
- Blush the liner for a more blurred, gentler look
You can also apply your transition shade along the lower lash line instead of a bold dark liner. The objective is gentle definition—without excessive framing.
3. Applying Shimmer Below the Brow Bone
While shimmer once seemed like a glowing illusion, it can actuallyemphasize texture on mature skin.
"Applying a shimmer under the brow can make you look older," she states.
A flat highlight tone beneath the eyebrow bone provides elevation withoutdrawing focus to subtle lines. If you still desire radiance, apply a small quantity of sparkle in the inner corner instead — this enhances illumination where desired without amplifying texture.
The Bottom Line
For women over 50, eyeshadow is not about applying a lot of color — it's about careful positioning. Stay away from dark shadow right in the crease, skip intense full-circle liner, and replace shimmer on the brow bone with a flat finish.
Minor changes in technique can immediately give eyes a more awake, open, and revitalized appearance. Occasionally, it's not about switching your products — it's about applying them differently.
