12U Softball Team Makes History with First Nationals Trip in 30 Years
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The UC Del Sol All-Stars created history this month by becoming the first 12U softball squad in their league's thirty-year existence to reach the Western Nationals.
"It's a remarkable chance. These girls all came from such a tiny league; they attended school together. They're friends both on and off the pitch. An incredible achievement for these young women," stated coach Alan Harrison.
"Very exciting to go through this experience and share it with several of my friends, and I believe I'll keep it in memory for a long time," said Macey Huntsman.
Although they had a 28-6-1 season total, making it to the Western Nationals was not straightforward.
In state competitions, the team participated in six consecutive matches within a span of 15 hours, ending with a loss in their final game.
"We thought our season was over. Everyone was hugging each other, we did well, we got up around 5 a.m., and it was going to be 10 o'clock," said Mckayla Harrison.
However, their path wasn't finished yet. Due to their determination during the competition, the softball team earned a position at the Western Nationals.
"Our team members are upset. I thought, wait, this is really occurring. I was extremely shocked," said Harrison.
The UC Del Sol All-Stars participated in the Western Nationals held in Moorpark, California, between July 22 and 27.
