When incorporating skincare items into your regimen, make sure not to overlook niacinamide a type of vitamin B3 that may assist in lowering the appearance of wrinkles , enhance complexion, address acne marks, reduce visible pore size, and restore even skin tone.
"Niacinamide is a great component suitable for every type of skin, particularly aged, dry, and delicate skins. It helps strengthen the protective layer and reduces redness and irritation," states Dendy Engelman, MD a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who focuses on anti-aging therapies at the Shafer Clinic located in New York City.

Following discussions with two board-certified dermatologists, such as Dr. Engelman and Michele Green, MD A cosmetic dermatologist based in New York City, specializing in anti-aging and aesthetic treatments, evaluated more than a dozen niacinamide serums to determine their effectiveness. The products were tested over a period of six weeks, with focus on how well they performed and what extra helpful components they contained. After this evaluation, we selected the top 10 most successful serums suitable for different skin types and price ranges.

Key Specs

  • Consistency: Gel-like serum
  • Ingredients: 2% alpha-arbutin, retinol
  • Skin type: All
This niacinamide serum offered by Tirtir is a great option for combination skin because it contains a powerful 20% level of niacinamide, addressing the different requirements of this skin type efficiently. "To notice noticeable changes in your complexion, the concentration must be no less than 4%", explains Dr. Green. "A serum with between 4 and 5% niacinamide helps enhance skin texture, firmness, and minor pigmentation issues. If you're looking for more intense benefits from niacinamide, products containing 10% or higher may provide better results."
Combination skin typically deals with an oily forehead and nose area along with dryer cheeks. This serum contains a significant amount of niacinamide which helps work together to control excess oil in greasier regions, decreasing shininess and breakouts, while also boosting moisture levels and strengthening the skin's protective layer in drier sections, thus lowering redness. According to Green, individuals with delicate skin should take care not to cause irritation when using products containing higher concentrations. Nevertheless, I found this product suitable for my combination skin without experiencing any discomfort. The inclusion of 2% alpha arbutin and glutathione, ingredients known for their ability to reduce pigmentation, contributed to fading small areas of uneven color caused by sun damage. I have used this serum as part of my skincare regimen for three months, enabling me to observe improvements in my complexion over time.

The Outset Restorative Niacinamide Night Cream is considered top-tier for dry skin because of its intensely moisturizing and protective formulation. It provides hydration while aiding in the restoration of the skin’s natural barrier, shielding it from external aggressors and maintaining optimal moisture levels.
"Individuals with dry skin will benefit from the extra moisturization provided by a niacinamide cream," says Green. Dry skin typically has an impaired protective layer, resulting in water depletion and heightened irritation. This particular cream contains high levels of niacinamide along with other soothing ingredients such as Hyaluroset, the company's renowned plant-based collagen, and bakuchiol, a gentler substitute for conventional retinol that causes fewer side effects. It helps strengthen the skin's natural defense system.

When I tried it, the cream provided lasting hydration without leaving a oily sensation. It helped my dry skin become more comfortable, soft, and visibly improved. I applied it during times of flaking and tautness, and it quickly refined my skin’s texture and enhanced its strength. Although it costs more than some alternatives listed here, it suits those who follow a particular routine. vegan lifestyle , since it consists solely of plant-based components.

Key Specs

  • Consistency: Fluid-like serum

  • Skin type: Dry, mature
The Saint Jane Star Flower Serum stands out as a great option for aging skin because it is carefully designed to tackle issues like lack of radiance, reduced firmness, inconsistent pigmentation, and small lines and wrinkles, using hyaluronic acid along with starflower extract. Those above 35 years old typically have "aging" skin and may find adding niacinamide to their skincare regimen beneficial. According to Engelman, "Niacinamide works similarly to retinol by reducing harm caused by free radicals and reinforcing the skin's protective layer—without causing irritation that many commonly face when using retinol."

The serum has a light, liquid consistency that allows it to efficiently deliver niacinamide to the skin, according to Green. "Many of my clients find that using a niacinamide serum offers significant advantages, particularly because it's lightweight and quickly absorbs into the skin," she adds. The starflower ingredient imparts a pearlescent appearance to the formula, giving the skin a radiant glow—ideal for my daily morning skincare regimen.

After using it every day for six weeks, my skin appeared more moisturized, and I found myself needing less highlighter to get a glowing look. Although this item is costly, the shimmery texture allows it to function as both a skincare product and a foundation base, justifying the expense.

Cons

  • Might not provide sufficient moisture for individuals with dry skin
  • Small amount of product

Key Specs

  • Consistency: Gel-like serum
  • Ingredients : Zinc PCA
  • Skin type: Oily, acne-prone

The COSRX Niacinamide 15 Serum is perfect for minimizing the appearance of large pores thanks to its strong 15% niacinamide content and its easy-to-apply texture. "Those who have oily skin may find greater advantages in using a lighter product, like a gel or toner pad, which doesn’t" clog their pores ,” explains Green.

Since large pores frequently stem from overactive oil glands and reduced skin flexibility, balancing this oil output can make your pores look more compact and diminished. This gel-based serum efficiently manages oil secretion, decreasing the chance of pores getting blocked and expanding. The formulation includes the acne-fighting component zinc PCA to manage sebum levels. At the same time, niacinamide aids in enhancing skin elasticity, making pore edges seem firmer and less visible once oil production decreases.

The light formula was easily absorbed by my skin with no leftover or sticky sensation. I have prominent pores on my cheeks, and after applying this serum for six weeks, they appeared more subtle.

This product is non-oily and perfect for using in the morning, with light-reflective components giving my complexion a shiny appearance. It worked so effectively that I never had to add highlighter to get a glowing effect. For those who prefer a natural look but still want some moisture, try this serum instead of traditional makeup. Cons

  • May be somewhat expensive for a boosters product

Key Specs

  • Consistency: Gel-like serum
  • Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, vitamin C
  • Skin type: Sensitive, acne-prone

This booster from Paula’s Choice is our preferred option for those with sensitive skin, due to its carefully crafted, unscented formula that maximizes the advantages of niacinamide. For delicate skin types, mild but efficient components are essential, and this booster stands out by offering a strong 10% niacinamide content free from fragrances, colorants, or alcohol.

Hyaluronic acid combined with vitamin C completes the formulation, aiding in reducing inflammation, evening out skin tone, and reinforcing the skin's protective layer. "Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid complement niacinamide very effectively," says Green. "As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects the skin against external harm by counteracting free radicals caused by sunlight exposure. It fights off oxidation and assists in diminishing visible indicators of early aging." As per Green, vitamin C also encourages skin renewal and collagen development, aids in lightening dark spots, and enhances cell recovery.

I really appreciated the light, fluid consistency of this item and how fast it gets absorbed into the skin. Although it's somewhat costly for a serum that's promoted as an enhancer, if you have delicate skin and wish to prevent irritation, a mild serum such as this could justifies the expense.

Cons

  • Scented products may cause problems for individuals with highly sensitive skin.

Olay Super Serum stands out among store-bought products due to its combination of three strong, proven components offered at a very reasonable cost. The formulation features niacinamide to aid in restoring skin’s protective layer, along with vitamin C for lightening dark spots and providing antioxidant benefits, as well as collagen peptides to enhance skin elasticity and minimize visible wrinkles. This balanced mix addresses various skincare issues, offering a flexible and practical daily option.

A possible downside is that the item emits a flower-like scent which comes across as more artificial rather than natural. While this wasn’t to my liking, different people might have varying opinions. In the end, the worth of this product remains clear.

"Including niacinamide in your skincare regimen can improve skin clarity and radiance, resulting in a vibrant, healthy look," says Green. If an over-the-counter product achieves this well, it's beneficial to include it in your routine, particularly if you're working with limited funds.

Cons

  • Not all people may find mica suitable for everyday use.

Key Specs

  • Consistency: Fluid-like serum
  • Ingredients: Diglycoside of gallic acid, squalane, mica
  • Skin type: Dull, all

Drunk Elephant B-Goldi Bright Drops include a 5% level of niacinamide, the amount Engelman suggests for optimal outcomes. The product also features diglucosyl gallic acid. , a powerful brightening ingredient that targets hyperpigmentation and is known for its skin-brightening properties. The “goldi” effect comes from light-reflecting particles that impart an instant, healthy glow, while key active ingredients help to improve skin clarity and brightness over time.

I enjoyed using this product every day in the morning, noticing that the light-reflective particles produced a glowing appearance, enough that I didn’t need to use a highlighter. The formulation includes squalane, derived from plants, offering gentle moisture without leaving a oily feel.
You should know that the shiny appearance comes from a substance known as mica, which could raise concerns for certain individuals. Inhaling mica regularly has been linked to breathing problems. However, this shouldn't pose a problem with skincare items since the danger arises mainly when mica dust becomes suspended in the air. Even though these components can be strong, I had no adverse effects after applying them every day for six weeks. Engelman mentions that "visible improvements typically occur within four to eight weeks and continue to enhance over time."

This moisturizer targets aged skin near the eyes using encapsulated retinol, which softly and efficiently encourages cellular renewal to reduce visible fine lines and wrinkles, without causing significant discomfort. Ceramides, essential fats for maintaining the skin's protective layer, help restore and strengthen delicate eye area skin, reducing water loss and shielding it from external harm. How We Evaluated Top Niacinamide Serums

I used each of the niacinamide serums from this list every day at home for between four and six weeks. Although some of the products were unfamiliar to me, others had been a regular part of my skincare routine for many years.

While assessing niacinamide serums, I examined their effectiveness in lightening my skin tone, fading small areas of pigmentation, minimizing visible pores, and reducing signs of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, I looked at how easily the product was absorbed by my skin and whether it caused any stickiness or residue.

In conclusion, I sought the advice of the following physicians for their specialized knowledge:

  • Dr. Dendy Engelman, a skin specialist and Mohs surgery expert based in New York City
  • Dr. Michele Green, a skin specialist based in New York City

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Niacinamide Serum

Knowing your skin type is the most effective method for selecting suitable products. Since niacinamide is present in serums, lotions, and cleansers, Green suggests the following:

  • Individuals who have oily or blemish-prone skin may benefit from using niacinamide-based serums that have a lightweight, fluid texture, as they tend to be absorbed faster compared to traditional moisturizers.
  • Individuals who have dry or aging skin should apply a moisturizer containing niacinamide, which helps to nourish the skin and strengthen the protective layer of the complexion.
  • Individuals with normal or mixed skin tones may benefit from using gel-based serums.

Things to Steer Clear of When Using a Niacinamide Serum

Different skin types might require avoiding specific combinations of niacinamide with particular active components. For instance, individuals with delicate skin could experience discomfort when using a niacinamide serum containing retinol.

You should also take note of the level of niacinamide. "The optimal concentration of niacinamide varies depending on your skin type and the outcomes you wish to obtain," explains Engelman. "The lowest suggested amount is around 2 percent (individuals with delicate skin might prefer this milder strength), although I suggest using 4 to 5 percent for maximum effectiveness."

What is Nicotinic Acid Amide, and how does it benefit your skin?

"Niacinamide, an effective version of vitamin B3, is widely recognized for its adaptability in tackling different skincare issues," notes Green. "Its special capacity to control melanin levels has made it a common component for diminishing visible dark spots and areas of uneven pigmentation." According to Green, niacinamide can also enhance moisture retention, make the skin look fuller, and reduce the visibility of small lines and wrinkles.

Which Skincare Components Complement Niacinamide?

As per Engelman, niacinamide performs effectively in skincare items including serums and lotions, along with active solutions such as retinol and alpha hydroxy acids. "It collaborates well with beneficial components like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, and assists in reducing discomfort caused by more intense ingredients (such as retinol and alpha hydroxy acids)."

Green mentions that hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are among her top choices for combining with niacinamide. There are no specific components to steer clear of when using a niacinamide serum. Nevertheless, if you're mixing niacinamide with retinol, or if your niacinamide product includes retinol, it's crucial to also use sunscreen .

FAQs

How frequently should I apply niacinamide to see results?
Green and Engelman both suggest incorporating niacinamide into your daily skincare routine. That said, they mention that if you develop any redness or discomfort, it’s important to inform your skin specialist. Engleman also points out that niacinamide is generally "easily tolerated," indicating that severe reactions are uncommon.
For how long should I apply niacinamide to notice improvements?
Typically, results become noticeable within four to eight weeks," says Engelman, "and continue to get better with ongoing usage.
Is nicotinamide safe for sensitive skin?
Certainly. "Niacinamide is suitable for 'sensitive and inflamed skin,' thanks to its soothing and enriching effects," says Engelman.
