While frequently performed by artists such as Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, and Joni Mitchell, this is the sole known recording of Guthrie performing it himself. Listen to "Deportee" below.
Woodie at Home - Volume 1 + 2 Was developed by reviving analog tapes that Guthrie recorded when he was 38 years old, along with discovering previously unseen family photos, song lyrics, and art from his collection. During the beginning of 1951 and 1952, Guthrie recorded these tracks alone using a single microphone on a reel-to-reel recorder at his family's small two-room home in Brooklyn, New York. Almost 75 years after they were made, these recordings were digitized by Steve Rosenthal, enhanced and refined by Jessica Thompson, and jointly produced by them together with Anna Canoni for this fresh compilation.
These recordings include more than just his own compositions; they also capture the noises made by his young children, doors opening with a creak, and spontaneous remarks from the artist. "I was at home taking care of the kids alone," Guthrie mentions in an audio clip discovered on one of the early homemade tapes. "Therefore, the child-related tapes I'm mailing to you—those featuring both me and the kids—I don't want you returning them or doing anything like that. I simply wish for you to hold onto them and listen to them, getting a sense of where all great traditional songs originate."
Anna Canoni, Woody Guthrie's granddaughter and the head of Woody Guthrie Publications, explained the significance of these unique home recordings: "These unpolished and personal home tapes mainly include songs that Woody couldn’t publish during his lifetime, due to his early death from Huntington’s disease. These recordings weren't meant for public distribution; they served as an initial presentation of Woody's work to his music publisher. Within these private tracks, Woody talks about significant historical events such as the plane accident in Los Gatos Canyon and the Trenton Six trial, encounters with Albert Einstein and how his ideas could combat racial hatred, narratives of those who have been overlooked and mistreated, he also speaks about love, naturally including themes related to opposing fascism. Woody's soft-spoken, straightforward manner along with occasionally off-key guitar playing serves as a modest yet powerful reminder of the real strength found within music."
