Haywood County Reports 12 Active Whooping Cough Cases

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - Officials from Haywood County have verified 12 current instances of pertussis, which is often referred to as whooping cough.
Authorities stated that out of the verified cases, three involve adults, with the remaining individuals being minors and teenagers below the age of 19 residing in the area.
The Haywood Health and Human Services stated that it will keep a close watch and inform the public about developments as the count of current cases fluctuates.
Signs of pertussis are as follows:
- Prolonged or intense episodes of coughing Extended or harsh bouts of coughing Lengthy or vigorous coughing attacks Severe or extended periods of coughing Intense and prolonged coughing spells Heavy or long-lasting coughing episodes Strong and persistent coughing fits Extreme or protracted coughing sessions Frequent and forceful coughing incidents Violent or lengthy coughing surges
- A "whooping" noise during inhalation following a cough
- Vomiting after coughing
- Watery nose or congested nose
- Slight elevation in body temperature (or no increase whatsoever)
Public health authorities recommended vaccination as a way to avoid whooping cough. Immunizations can be obtained at Haywood Health and Human Services located on Paragon Parkway.
Citizens are advised to remain at home when experiencing signs of illness and to practice good personal cleanliness.
