Comic-Con Omaha Kicks Off This Weekend!

The Nebraska Comic Convention will take place at Omaha's CHI Health Center over the weekend.

The latest "con" marks Octopus Events Group's inaugural event, although the team has organized comic conventions such as Portland, Oregon's Rose City Comic Con and Seattle's Emerald City Comic Con before forming OEG.

Ron Brister, one of the eight co-founders of OEG and also a creator of Rose City Comic Con, mentioned that they selected Comic Con Nebraska as their first event because they noticed the region lacked a comic-focused convention.

"We believed there were other places in the region that might be more centered around celebrities or anime or video games, and we considered, why not focus on an area where we know there are comic book enthusiasts, as they've attended some of our previous events. So, we decided to bring comic book artists to them and to their city," said Brister. .

Since this is the con's inaugural year, Brister mentioned that the group has two main objectives: to maintain affordability and to put on an excellent event.

We hope people leave feeling like 'that was so much fun.' We don't want them to think, 'wow, that was super costly,'" Brister mentioned. "In the first year of hosting any of these events in a new location with fresh visitors, they turn into our advocates. These individuals can share with their friends about attending Comic Con Nebraska and having an enjoyable experience, encouraging others to join them next year.

This isn't the sole comic convention taking place in the Omaha region. OCon, which has been Omaha's most enduring comic convention and pop culture fair for 10 years, occurred earlier this July. Brister mentioned that they made an effort to avoid conflicting with other events.

Since these dates became available afterward, we believe anyone attending OCon will also attend [Nebraska Comic Con]," Brister stated. "[OCon] is the well-known event. People will continue to go there. We hope they do. We want OCon to keep growing. However, we're held a month later. Do we worry about too many events happening at once? I don't think so. I believe Lincoln, Omaha, and nearby regions can definitely handle several conventions.

Brister mentioned that they have already pledged to host Comic Con Nebraska for an additional year and plan to seek input from attendees regarding the content and guests they would like to feature.

We aren't sure what Comic Con Nebraska will resemble in its second, third, or fourth years," he stated. "We understand how our other events expanded, and I can confirm that each of them evolved in ways we likely couldn't have imagined during their first year. Therefore, we remain uncertain. The only thing we do know is that we're dedicated to holding a second year already, so we'll definitely return regardless of circumstances for the next edition.
