Harlem Honors Fatman Scoop with Street Renaming Ceremony

As Hot97 According to reports, the corner where 109th Street meets 5th Avenue will be renamed "Isaac 'Fatman Scoop' Freeman III Place," celebrating the Grammy-award winning musician's impact on both music and his neighborhood. Recognized for his energetic vocals, Fatman Scoop made a lasting impression on hip-hop through tracks such as "Be Faithful" and features on "Lose Control" and "It's Like That."

The gathering will bring together relatives, companions, and community figures in an energetic tribute honoring Scoop's impact. Hosted by the Freeman Family, New York City Council member Dr. Yusef Salaam, and the Forever Fatman Scoop Foundation, the occasion highlights the musician's strong connections to Harlem.

"Scoop has consistently shown pride in representing Harlem," said his brother, Kendell "Sav" Freeman.

"This joint naming serves as an honor not only for his talent, but also for his continuous dedication to supporting the community that nurtured him," he said.

The powerful voice and lively presence of Fatman Scoop turned him into an international star, highlighted by his 1999 hit "Be Faithful" reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. His contributions to Missy Elliott's "Lose Control" and Mariah Carey's "It’s Like That" in 2005 strengthened his impact within the industry. Outside of music, his commitment to the culture and community of Harlem had a significant effect, which makes this tribute well-deserved.

Scoop died on August 31, 2024, at the age of 56 following a collapse during a show in Hamden, Connecticut. Although emergency CPR was administered and medical attention was provided promptly, he passed away due to natural causes related to hypertension-related heart disease and arteriosclerosis.

The soon-to-be-announced street dedication event will be an emotional occasion for Harlem to honor a cherished individual whose voice and essence still motivate others.
