For millennia, gold and silver have been reliable means of trade. Although the U.S., along with many other countries, currently uses paper money, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking an alternative path by reintroducing these traditional precious materials into daily transactions.

On May 27, he enacted Bill 999, which is a law intended to formally designate gold and silver coins as valid currency within the state known as the Sunshine State.

As stated by The Florida Senate, coins accepted as legal currency should be distinctly labeled with their weight, quality, and place of manufacture. Furthermore, gold and silver coins acknowledged as valid money will be free from sales tax, possibly motivating more citizens to utilize and exchange tangible metals.

The legislation will come into force on July 1, 2026—provided the state's legislative body approves the necessary regulations first.

A safeguard from the drop in the dollar's value

DeSantis presented the legislation as an effort to safeguard Florida residents from the declining value of the U.S. dollar and increasing financial instability.
