Tesla's 82,000-lb electric truck: The 1,073 HP freight hammer arrives

Almost eight years after the initial prototype made its debut on a stage, Tesla has ultimately finalizedproductionspecifications for the Semi—and this time, it's not just talk. Full-scale production is scheduled to start in the second half of 2026 at a specialized facility close to the Nevada Gigafactory, signaling the actual market introduction of Tesla's much-anticipated truckelectric Class 8 truck.

The selection has become more straightforward and concentrated. Customers will have the option of two trims: a Standard Range variant with a 325-mile range per charge and a Long Range model offering up to 500 miles. However, the main highlight is improved weight efficiency. The Long Range Semi has a curb weight of 23,000 pounds but still achieves its desired range even when fully loaded at 82,000 pounds combined gross weight—a clear response to critics who claimed that battery weight would compromise cargo capacity.

Chargingis where Tesla is making the most effort. The Semi is equipped with Tesla's Megawatt Charging System (MCS 3.2), and the Long Range version can draw up to 1.2 megawatts. This means a 60 percent charge in roughly 30 minutes, a timing set to match federal driver rest break requirements instead of causing interruptions.logistics schedules.

Power transmission is equally forceful. Three separate motors located at the rear generate a total of 800 kW, approximately 1,073 horsepower, providing the truck with sufficient torque to maintain highway speeds on steep inclines even when fully loaded. Tesla projects efficiency at around 1.7 kWh per mile, making the Semi a possible more cost-effective option compared to diesel in terms of operational expenses.long-haul applications.

The challenge lies in cost. Initial projections from 2017 have risen significantly. Current industry estimates suggest the Long Range Semi will be priced around $290,000 and the Standard Range model approximately $260,000, representing a rise of more than 60 percent compared to initial goals. Tesla aims to increase production to 50,000 units per year, with deliveries starting in 2026. The Semi is no longer just an idea—it's set to test if electric trucking can achieve real-world economic viability.
