Sophie's Royal Wedding Outfit Sparks Controversy

In recent decades, the British royal family has demonstrated their firm adherence to traditions and fashion rules. They refrain from showing their shoulders at formal occasions, keep wearing hats regardless of their practicality, and often limit themselves to specific nail polish shades. One might expect that this strict approach means royals like Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, would avoid certain fashion mistakes, yet an extremely unsuitable outfit she wore proves otherwise.

In 2002, Sophie went to the wedding of a Norwegian royal, Princess Märtha Louise, wearing a dress that violated one of the most significant rules ofwhat to avoid wearing to a wedding: Avoid trying to outshine the bride. The dress was long and white, featuring four triangular navy sections. Although the whole dress wasn't entirely white, the majority of the fabric was. Additionally, with the tiara and white scarf, the outfit could have easily resembled a simple wedding dress, which was clearly not suitable for someone attending as a guest.

Dressing in white is already problematic when it's done by ordinary people without access to a royal wardrobe, but it's particularly unwise for Sophie. Not only did it appear as a deliberate effort to draw attention away from the bride, but it also reflected a disregard for proper etiquette. Her clothing choice was self-centered and has definitely played a role in her ongoing poor fashion image.

Sophie frequently appears on the worst-dressed lists during royal occasions

After marrying Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1999, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, became a regular presence at royal functions. This long-standing role within the monarchy may have enhanced her in various aspects, but her fashion sense continued to draw criticism. In the early years, many of her outfits were considered fashion missteps, with several being ill-fitting or unsuitable. One memorable instance that remains etched in people's minds was the brightly colored suit she wore to the 2001 Royal Ascot.

From a royal perspective, the outfit was an unusual choice. It combined vibrant colors that appeared casual, particularly because the skirt was above the knee. Even worse, the look was unflattering in terms of style. While bold colors can complement each other, the overall effect should not look like an afterthought, and this clearly was. In summary, it didn't seem appropriate for a semi-formal gathering, let alone a significant royal occasion.

As time has passed, the main change in Sophie's clothing style is that her outfits are less unsuitable and more dull. In 2024, for instance, she was ranked as one of theworst-dressed members of the royal family at Trooping the Colour, thanks to an incredibly boring yellow dress. You might think this would lead to a change in fashion, but it didn't. She arrived the following year with an even more uninteresting dress and was perhaps theleast fashionable royal at Trooping the Colour 2025. Then she went all in with another unoriginal dress at the2025 Royal Ascot. We're not certain if Sophie collaborates with a stylist, but whoever is responsible for her wardrobe definitely needs a major fashion update.
