New Mexico's Only Woman-Owned Bike Shop Meets Community Needs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.(KRQE) – Kayla Clark operates the sole female-owned motorcycle repair shop in the state. She establishedMechanica Restoration and Designon the corner of 4th and Menaul in Albuquerque earlier this month following the identification of a significant need within the neighborhood.
Clark set out to create an inclusive environment where individuals from every background could feel at ease bringing their bikes in for repairs. "I've recognized a gap in the industry," Clark explained. "I've worked in various shops and in the automotive sector, and it's crucial to have non-judgmental spaces. That's why I decided to offer this myself."
She has encountered and communicated with clients who have occasionally felt exploited in a male-dominated industry or hobby. For many years, she pondered ways she could address this issue. A few weeks ago, when she launched Mechanica Restoration and Design, her vision became a reality.
When individuals enter my store, I hope they experience a sense of assurance when it comes to their motorcycle maintenance, and that they receive clear communication throughout the process so they understand what's happening with their bike," Clark stated. "I also aim for people to feel motivated.
She mentions that in the brief period her shop has been open, she's already noticing its positive impact. "As a female rider, it's much less daunting to approach a female mechanic, instead of going to a larger shop where you feel more intimidated," said customer Cheryl Lucas. "It's simply easier to converse with a woman and not worry about being taken advantage of or overcharged."
Kayla works with numerous female and LGBTQ clients, who believe the community required a space such as this within the motorcycle industry. She emphasizes how crucial it was for her to establish a safe environment for riders from all backgrounds.
I believe representation matters because when individuals enter stores, seeing someone they can connect with and feel understood by is something I aim for," Clark stated. "Opening this store was a way to convey that idea.
A coffee shop and brewery are located nearby, making it a place where her customers can relax, connect, and foster a sense of community while waiting for their bike to be fixed on the same day. She expresses her desire to encourage others in a similar way.
I'm genuinely proud to be the sole woman-owned motorcycle shop in New Mexico," Clark stated. "However, I don't wish to be the final one.
The local business operates daily from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., excluding Wednesdays and Thursdays, and provides services such as repairs, maintenance, and restorations. It can be found at 2701 4th Street NW in Albuquerque.
