Merida ETMO Priced Between $4,900 and $7,060, But Calls Itself "Entry-Level"

Merida has sent a strong message to the e-mountain bike industry: the "entry-level" period is no longer about being inexpensive, but rather about being more calculated. The company's new ETMO series is specifically designed for riders seeking a genuine trail-ready e-MTB without opting for a high-end, custom-built model. It is constructed upon Merida's well-established eONE-EIGHTY platform, rather than a frame that solely focuses on cost-cutting.

The ETMO configuration allows buyers to select their preferred level of trail performance. You can opt for 140 mm or 160 mm of suspension travel, along with a mixed-wheel setup that offers stability at high speeds and agility on technical trails. Simply put, Merida is promoting this as an e-bike that's gentle for beginners but also engaging as you improve.

The powertrain menu is entirely Bosch, featuring a mid-drive system that offers the choice between the Performance Line CX motor and the Performance Line PX. Battery options are varied—540 Wh, 600 Wh, or 800 Wh—allowing for customization of range and cost without making everyone pay the same “large battery or no battery” fee.

Merida also introduced a sizing approach that is subtly more significant than any single specification. Its AGILOMETER system prompts riders to select based on reach and handling instead of traditional frame size labels, essentially acknowledging that the way bicycles are sized for people has been illogical for a long time.

On the practical side, the ETMO model is clearly designed for true ownership, not just temporary excitement. It features a SRAM Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH), Boost axle spacing, a standard headset, and short 160 mm crank arms in all sizes to minimize pedal strikes on rough terrain. These are the kinds of details that save time, money, and hassle after the initial excitement wears off.

Pricing is where the "entry-level" category becomes more exciting. The ETMO range features eight models, beginning with the ETMO 400 priced at 3,650 GBP (approximately 4,900 USD) and culminating with the ETMO 800 at 5,250 GBP (around 7,060 USD). Should Merida successfully persuade customers that this offers a better balance—genuine trail performance, standard maintenance options, and Bosch dependability—it could potentially reshape the definition of "affordable" within the e-MTB market.
