Malawi Launches Emergency Polio Vaccination After Virus Detection

Deputy Health Minister Charles Chilambula, who is spearheading the initiative, stated that the vaccines are essential.
"It is crucial that we administer the vaccine now, as it also addresses this virus we have identified," Chilambula stated. The Health Ministry confirmed that the campaign employs a new oral polio vaccine created to stop circulating vaccine-derived Type 2 outbreaks.

The program initially focuses on children in eight areas before scaling up across the country to serve Malawi's 22 million people, according to UNICEF's health chief in Malawi,Dr. Joe Collins Opio, stated. He urged communities to "be part of the solution."
Mobile health workers, primarily women dressed in identical blue uniforms, transport vaccines in coolers on foot, while motorbikes deliver doses to isolated regions. Outdoor educational gatherings support the initiative, including speeches, music, and children displaying signs promoting polio vaccination, according to the AP.reported.
"Polio continues to pose a risk," statedDr. Akosua Sika Ayisi, a public health specialist from the WHO assisting with the initiative. She highlighted the significance of making sure every qualified child "in every community" is completely vaccinated to aid the worldwide effort against polio.
