Knoxville Cardiologist Explains Rare Condition of Late Actress Catherine O'Hara
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - As the world continues to grieve the passing of actress Catherine O’Hara, a Knoxville cardiologist discussed just how uncommon her condition was.
O'Hara suffered from a condition known as Total Situs Inversus. This means the heart is located on the right side of the body, and all other organs in the chest and abdomen are mirrored to the opposite side.
Dr. Ahmed Abdallah from Covenant Health notes that the condition occurs in only one out of 10,000 individuals, and many might not be aware they have it.
Actually, many cases are without symptoms and are found, you know, by chance through an X-ray or an EKG. This often leads to additional testing," Abdallah explained. "However, most of these patients lead normal, healthy lives. They don't experience any symptoms.

Abdallah mentioned that the condition can be linked with congenital abnormalities and other issues, making it crucial to seek medical evaluation if you or someone you know has it.
It's crucial to consult a cardiologist and undergo additional imaging if someone is known for or has discovered this condition," Abdallah stated. "Most patients will simply have mirrored organs. This is intriguing, but it shouldn't affect their daily life or activities. However, our main concern is ensuring they don't experience any related complications.
Abdallah mentioned that testing, particularly for heart-related issues, typically begins with your primary care provider. He explained that if your physician believes you are at increased risk, they will recommend a consultation with a heart specialist.
Although O’Hara suffered from this condition, she did not pass away because of it. Several reports state that her cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer being the root cause.
