Ireland's Top Car Remains a Hybrid SUV, Fifth Year in a Row

For the fifth consecutive year, Hyundai's Tucson has achieved what most car manufacturers can only wish for: complete supremacy in a national market. In 2025, the Tucson sold 4,643 units in Ireland, outperforming established models like the Škoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla, Kia Sportage, and Toyota Yaris Cross. It has remained at the top since 2021, and now it's not just a winning streak—it's a long-standing rule.
The steady performance is what stands out. Tucson sales reached 5,468 in 2021, increased to 6,432 in 2022, and remained stable at 5,238 in 2023, 5,266 in 2024, and 4,643 in 2025. Despite fluctuations in Ireland's overall automotive market, the Tucson maintained its position. This isn't just marketing—it's consistent customer behavior.
Step back and the explanation becomes more evident. Ireland, similar to much of Europe, has strongly favored SUVs and crossovers—particularly in the C-segment ideal range. Consumers are looking for storage capacity, a higher driving position, and a vehicle that performs well both in crowded urban areas and on country roads. The Tucson meets these requirements very effectively.
There's also the reality of the powertrain. Diesel regulations are becoming stricter, and fully electric vehicles continue to be costly, andchargingInfrastructure remains inconsistent in many areas. Hybrids have emerged as a balanced option, and Hyundai's focus on hybrids is effectively addressing current market needs.
In terms of brand, Toyota remains the leading choice in Ireland, although Hyundai is making significant progress. Last year, Hyundai sold 11,813 vehicles, positioning itself in a tight competition with Škoda and Kia for third to fifth place. If the Tucson continues at this rate, it's not only dominating its category but also transforming Hyundai's position across Europe.
