Hochul Pushes Driverless Car Shift in Budget
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — According to Governor Kathy Hochul's updated FY2027 Executive Budget proposal, self-driving vehicles currently being tested for ride-hailing services in New York City will remain within the city limits. In an amendment, she has decided against expanding the testing of autonomous vehicles for hire throughout the state.
Similar to how other states are demonstrating that self-driving cars are safer," said Adam Kovacevich from the Chamber of Progress, "Governor Hochul mentioned just last month that autonomous vehicles could enhance the safety of New York's roads.
An announcement was made in January by the Governor's office highlighting the promising future of self-driving cars in New York.
"Autonomous vehicles don't operate under the influence of alcohol and they don't drive while distracted," said Kovacevich.
The discussion regarding driverless car services focuses on human factors. The Transport Workers Union views the expansion of autonomous car services as a danger.
"The goal here is to remove people from the workplace," said John Samuelson, president of the Transit Workers Union.
Governor Hochul has not yet explained the reason behind the alteration in her budget.
The suggestion to evaluate vehicles featuring self-driving technology, excluding those used for ride-hailing services, is still in place.
