Bikers Park Two Motorcycles Per Spot—Until New Rule Changes Everything

Picture working in a place where the parking area is too small for everyone to fit their vehicles. Would you come in early to secure a good parking space, wear shoes that are easy to walk in so you're ready to park farther away, or look for a reason to complain about those who are already parked in the lot?

In this story,A number of motorcyclists attempting to maximize space in the parking area by placing their bikes two per spot. However, an unhappy worker chose to voice a complaint.

Let's observe how the narrative unfolds.

Motorcycle Storage or: How They Were Taught to Cease Complaining and Embrace the Bike

A tale from several years ago, when I was based in Japan.

Finding parking on military bases is usually not a problem. After all, they were constructed by Americans.

However, bases located on mainland Japan are quite small, which makes sense given the limited availability of real estate and so on.

One half of the parking area was not functional.

Construction projects are a persistent problem that frequently occupy a large number of parking spaces.

At that time, there had been a continuous issue in our designated parking lot for several months, occupying almost half the spaces.

Thirty minutes prior to the start of work, the parking lot would be entirely occupied, forcing individuals to park on the street, a short walk away.

Notably, many individuals in my unit had recently begun riding motorcycles in the months prior to this event.

Individuals on motorcycles attempted to occupy the least amount of space possible.

Being (mostly) good people, we frequently parked two bicycles in a single parking space to help conserve the limited available spots for others.

Out of approximately 20 available spots, we could expect around 8 to 12 bikes occupying 4 to 6 spaces. That's efficient, isn't it?

It's understandable that people became frustrated with the parking issues, and as they couldn't do anything about the construction, they frequently looked for ways to "take" parking spaces.

The motorcycles in the parking area were relatively new, which made them noticeable. Because of this, people would take their frustration over not finding a space out on us. And just as often happens when someone is feeling especially vindictive, they would focus on the smallest issues to complain about.

A new regulation was introduced targeting motorcycle riders.

One day, an individual in a position of power declared that according to the base regulations, each parking space could accommodate only one vehicle.

This clearly appeared to be a means of irritating those of us who were riding, and it did.

Many frustrated glances were exchanged until one of the more thoughtful people among us came up with a plan. As it was "illegal" for us to park two in a single space, we decided to stop.

We did. However, it wasn't that straightforward.

It would be counterproductive for the person who raised the complaint.

Each day, the majority of the motorcyclists arrived early, so early that the parking area was almost vacant. We would park, one motorcycle per space, and although we had initially been neat and organized, we suddenly started parking at an angle, occupying the whole spot.

Rather than 12 bikes occupying 6 spaces, it suddenly became 12 bikes for 12 spots, causing the parking lot to fill up an hour before work started.

Anyone who had complained about us breaking the rules ended up having to park much farther down the street.

The rules changed back.

We carried this out for approximately a week.

Monday arrived, and we all returned to our usual routines, arriving at regular times and parking two people per space.

It goes without saying, I didn't hear any complaints about the motorcyclists again.

Anyone who complained likely didn't consider the outcomes.

Let's check how Reddit responded to this story.

It’s basic math.

Here's how a business managed motorcycle parking...

This individual believes they managed the circumstances flawlessly.

The new regulation was a terrible decision!
