AAA warns of vehicle damage from salt

MARQUETTE, Michigan (WLUC) - The current winter has brought significantly more snow than in past years, resulting in an increased use of road salt. This salt can cause vehicle damage if not properly addressed.

Adrienne Woodland, a representative from AAA Auto Club Group, states that salt can lead to corrosion forming beneath vehicles if not addressed.

This may impact brake lines, vehicle subframes, chassis, and other parts. Salt can also lead to rust in the wheel mechanisms, such as the mounting components and dirt shield. AAA cautions that this type of damage will not be covered by insurance.

So, salt damage can be overlooked since much of the harm occurs beneath the vehicle," Woodland explained. "Even with modern corrosion-resistant designs, the undercarriage remains at risk, and because corrosion is seen as regular wear and tear, it isn't typically covered by your insurance.

An effective method to reduce this harm is to bring your vehicle to a car wash every two weeks and focus particularly on the bottom part of the car.
