9 of the Most Outrageous BAFTA Red Carpet Disasters

As award season begins, many people watch to find out who wins (and who doesn't) at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmys. We should also highlight the British Academy Film Awards, which take place in London, England, where celebrities gather dressed in their most elegant outfits. Similar to other major award ceremonies, the BAFTAs call for formal attire, meaning only the top designer outfits are worn. However, even though the looks are luxurious, celebrities don't always get it right, and many have ended up onworst-dressed lists over the years.

The BAFTAs have existed since the late 1940s, making it inevitable that there have been some fashion missteps throughout its long history. Certain beloved celebrities have arrived in unusual clothing, chosen unsuitable red carpet ensembles, or appeared significantly underdressed. For an event as significant as the BAFTAs, it's crucial for well-known individuals to get their outfits right, and regrettably, many have not managed to present stylish looks over the years.

Ariana Grande was just a small disturbance from drifting off.

Ariana Grande's fashion evolution has been truly remarkable., which is why her 2025 BAFTAs outfit left us confused. The pink and black Louis Vuitton dress had a snug, low-cut top that brought bold glamour to the red carpet, but the lower part was an overdone puff. There were multiple layers of ruching, with the upper section spreading out like wings. We understand that Grande is still in her "Wicked" phase, but this look didn't convey Glinda the Good.

Helena Bonham Carter made a misstep with her Dalmatian-inspired outfit

Did Helen Bonham Carter audition for "101 Dalmatians" at the BAFTAs in 2021? It definitely seemed like it — she was exuding genuine Cruella de Vil energy with her black and white polka dot dress. The pattern was too simple for a black tie occasion, and the frilly layered skirt, combined with the overwhelming number of dots, was a bit over the top. Bonham Carter is recognized for her eccentric fashion sense, so such surprises are somewhat anticipated. Nevertheless, there's a proper way to...Embrace the polka dot revival without appearing overly cute, and the "Enola Holmes" actor might have preferred fewer ruffles.

Millie Bobby Brown's effort to embrace a goth style was unsuccessful.

Millie Bobby Brown was just 18 years old when she attended the 2022 BAFTAs, so it's no surprise she opted for a more mature appearance. Her Gothic dress featured a low V-neck bodice paired with a lace bralette, a peplum waist that led into a sheer lace skirt, and long black velvet gloves. Although we understand the direction she was going with this outfit, there was an excessive amount of detail, particularly with the strange trail of lace descending down her back. It's fair to say this was one of...Brown's clothing choices that completely failed to hit the mark.

Kristen Scott Thomas' monochrome outfit was a dull affair

Kristen Scott Thomas is not typically associated with wearing elaborate gowns on the red carpet, but her black-and-white dress at the 2018 BAFTAs was extremely dull. The three-quarter sleeves and white panels down the front made it look as though she was dressed in a long coat. The "Mission: Impossible" actress also opted for a minimal hairstyle and jewelry, enhancing her low-key appearance at the awards ceremony. Although understated outfits can occasionally make an impact, such as Julia Roberts' 2001 Valentino dress, Thomas' outfit fell short of being suitable for an awards show.

Jennifer Garner appeared to be using a baby carrier.

Jennifer Garner might have been feeling the urge to start a family at the 2013 BAFTAs, as the top of her Roland Mouret outfit strangely resembled a Baby Björn. The flowing chest area could have been mistaken for a sleeping baby's head, and the angled white straps only enhanced the illusion that Garner was bringing her little one to the event. The "Alias" actress typically chooses feminine and flirtatious looks for the red carpet, so this structured, two-tone style was a big change. While it might have looked stylish on the runway with a shorter skirt in Kelly green, Garner's version just didn't work.

Naomi Campbell did not captivate in her hooded cloak.

We're uncertain about why Naomi Campbell arrived at the 2024 BAFTAs wearing a Severus Snape-inspired outfit, but here she is. Among the 'fits we anticipated the supermodel would choose, a long black hooded cloak and ruffled dress was not one of them. While she certainly added some flair to the red carpet, Campbell appeared more like she had emerged from a "Harry Potter" film rather than making a stylish entrance. We understand that London can be quite cold in February, but there was no necessity for so many layers.

Rebel Wilson was dressed for a business event instead of the BAFTAs

If someone remarked, "I'd like to speak to the manager" at the 2016 BAFTAs, it wouldn't be unexpected to see Rebel Wilson arriving for her duty. She appeared exactly like one in her black jacket and coordinating high-low skirt, paired with practical pumps. The "Pitch Perfect" actress would have blended seamlessly into a seasonal office party rather than the British equivalent of the Oscars, particularly with her disheveled curls and absence of flashy accessories. Based on Wilson's expression, she didn't seem to be enjoying her outfit that evening either.

Margot Robbie showed that high fashion doesn't always mean stylish

Margot Robbie usually makes good decisions regarding her fashion, except for the instance when she wore an unattractive dress to the 2019 BAFTAs. The Chanel haute couture outfit had a bodice decorated with colorful jewels, which was already quite intense. However, the unusual aspect came from the large black ruffled shoulders, making Robbie appear as if she were about to take off, along with a mermaid-style hem. If we were fortunate enough to have a custom-designed dress, we certainly wouldn't have chosen Robbie's approach, and her appearance shows that even haute couture can seem cheap.

Kylie Minogue ought to have performed Loco-Motion in this outfit

As a veteran singer and dancer, Kylie Minogue possesses striking legs, which is why we understand her desire to show them off at the BAFTAs in 2007. However, her vibrant blue dress adorned with an overwhelming number of swirls and rhinestones was not the best choice. The whole outfit appeared like a poster from '90s graphic design, evoking the "Saved By the BellOpening. Moreover, the asymmetrical sleeves appeared to be an effort to add an avant-garde touch to the sheath dress, but it fell far short. We hope Minogue leaves this early-2000s disaster in the vault forever.
