$2,940 Italian Steel Returns: 1x13 Gravel Bike Challenges Carbon's Reign

If you believed steel had vanished in the era of aero carbon bikes, Officina Battaglin has something to say. The renowned Italian frame manufacturer has introduced the Milano, a TIG-welded steel gravel bike that combines traditional artistry with contemporary gravel performance—and it's priced lower than many custom builds.

The Milano features a custom TIG-welded steel frame, a thoughtful choice to achieve an ideal mix of performance and affordability. It comes standard with Campagnolo’s Ekar GT 1x13 groupset, a drivetrain specifically designed for gravel cyclists seeking precise gear ratios and Italian style. Those who prefer electronic shifting won't be disappointed either—versions using Shimano GRX Di2 and SRAM Rival AXS are already in development.

Initially, a full carbon fork provides increased stiffness and reduced weight, along with triple-pack mounts and fender bosses suitable for serious bikepacking configurations. The tire clearance can accommodate up to 50mm (1.97 inches), ensuring this is not a model designed for narrow tires—it's intended for actual off-road conditions. The design features modern elements: a T47 threaded bottom bracket, flat-mount disc brakes, and 12mm through-axles. When purchased, it comes equipped with 45mm tubeless Continental Terra tires and even includes a carbon Deda Elementi seatpost.

Pricing is where things become intriguing. The mechanical Ekar GT model begins at 2,500 EUR (approximately 2,940 USD). Moving up to the Shimano GRX Di2 version, the price rises to 2,999 EUR (around 3,530 USD). The SRAM Rival AXS variant is the most expensive, priced at 3,499 EUR (roughly 4,120 USD). For a handcrafted Italian steel frame featuring contemporary gravel design, this is quite bold.

The Milano is offered in five different sizes and three subtle color options—white, gray, and gold—and is currently available for pre-order. Amidst a market focused on lightweight carbon racing bikes, Battaglin believes there remains strong interest in steel frames that provide a comfortable ride, can carry equipment, and appear suitable for both the Dolomites and your nearby gravel trail.
