1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer Restomod with 485-HP Hemi V8
JeepThe Super Wagoneer from the 1960s was one of the firstluxury SUVsthe most remarkable thing the world has ever seen. Much like theRange Roverthat followed, it merged robust off-road performance with a luxurious interior and comfort. Currently, the Super Wagoneer name is no longer in the range, as the brand concentrates on models such as theWagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as the proven and reliableWranglerinstead. However, restomod expert Vigilante 4x4 has brought back a 1966 Super Wagoneer and updated it into a more contemporary vehicle to drive while maintaining the qualities that made it unique.
Redefining One of the Pioneering High-End SUVs
First introduced in 1966, the Super Wagoneer played a key role in shaping the concept of a luxury SUV long before the category became so popular, with numerous brands now offering their own versions. The Vigilante team maintained the recognizable, square design, chrome details, and classic elements while restoring the body and painting it in Empire Blue. One of the few signs that this particular model is not standard is the large BFGoodrich tires, which provide a more elevated and rugged appearance compared to the original. While someJeep restomodschallenge the original car's principles, the Vigilante team maintained its core identity while incorporating necessary improvements without exceeding reasonable limits.
Modern Power Within a Timeless Frame
Vigilante abandoned the original 270-hp AMC V8 and installed a third-generation 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that delivers 485 hp – the same engine used in theNew Jeep Wrangler Willys 392. The previous three-speed automatic was replaced with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, offering a more engaging driving experience. Along with the new powertrain, a handcrafted suspension system, enhanced Baer brakes, and an updated four-wheel-drive system were introduced to manage the increased performance. Vigilante is no stranger to modifying classic Jeeps either. The company has previously experimented with electrification by converting an old Jeep Wagoneer.into a full-blown EV.
A Vintage Cabin Featuring Secret Innovations
Inside, the design reflects the same philosophy as the exterior. A significant portion of the cabin maintains historical accuracy with features such as a push-button radio, bench seats, and analog gauges that keep the classic feel. However, hidden beneath the surface are contemporary comforts like Bluetooth capability and a fully operational HVAC system. Founder Daniel van Doveren captured it well, stating the aim was to "provide a completely new driving experience" without violating tradition. That is precisely what they achieved.
