Mustang GTD Unseated: Corvettes ZR1 Twins Crown New Fastest American Cars at Nürburgring
- One month following the release of its initial trailer, Chevy has ultimately shared its lap times around the Nürburgring, with the ZR1X Now officially the quickest American vehicle on the track.
- Actually, Chevrolet also introduced the Corvette. Z06 besides the ZR1 and ZR1X, all three models were tested by internal engineering drivers.
- The Z06 recorded a time of 7:11.826, the ZR1 achieved a time of 6:50.763, and the ZR1X completed it in 6:49.275.
The Nürburgring Nordschleife features 73 turns across 12.9 miles. It is regarded as the standard track for high-performance vehicles throughout all areas of the automobile industry. Recently, just one month after hinting at its effort, Chevrolet has announced that the ZR1X set the quickest lap time for any vehicle produced by an American brand.
Indeed, the ZR1 currently holds the first and second positions on the podium for American-made production vehicles. Chevrolet has introduced not just the 1250-horsepower ZR1X, but also the 1064-hp ZR1 and the 670-hp Z06.
A recent video published by Chevrolet alongside The Times outlines the car company's objectives. Along with aiming for a time under seven minutes per lap, Chevrolet naturally sought to be recognized as the quickest American brand on the track — mission achieved — but they also aimed to accomplish this using their own drivers.
If you recall how the ZR1 dominated the top racing circuits across America earlier this year, then it shouldn’t come as a shock. In this instance, vehicle performance manager Aaron Link drove the Z06 to a time of 7:11.826. Meanwhile, ZR1 vehicle dynamics engineer Brian Wallace achieved a lap time of 6:50.763 in the ZR1. As expected due to its tremendous power, the ZR1X recorded the quickest lap among the three, with vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell managing a time of 6:49.275.
During those moments, the ZR1 models secured positions five and seven on the overall ranking for production vehicles at the 'Ring. The top spot in the classification belongs to a remarkable time of 6:29.090 achieved by Maro Engel driving the Mercedes-AMG One. For Chevrolet, the most significant aspect is that these two cars outperformed their local competitor, the Ford Mustang GTD, which recorded a time of 6:52.072 earlier this year when professional driver Dirk Müller was at the helm.

Although these three vehicles were documented under the Prototype/Pre-Production classification, each was constructed according to U.S. manufacturing specifications, with only minor safety adjustments advised by the racing circuit. These changes involved adding a roll bar, a complete protective racing seat, a fire suppression system, and a six-point restraint belt. This classification occurs because the ZR1 models weren’t available in Europe, and the Z06 was produced following American guidelines.
In some way, even though these periods were sufficient, the Chevrolet team kept possibilities open for additional advancements ahead. "What comes next for us?" Link questioned toward the conclusion of Chevrolet's film. "I believe, throughout history, Corvettes have consistently had more plans, correct? We never cease," replied Chris Barber, the primary development engineer for the ZR1.
