MLB Prospect Trade Deadline Guide for Collectors

The MLB trading deadline is just one day away (July 31). Although several minor transactions have occurred up until now, speculation remains intense regarding major deals that might happen, particularly as numerous playoff hopefuls remain active in both leagues. Considering this, I thought it would be useful to look at some of the leading prospects potentially moving teams within the next 24-48 hours and their associated betting markets.

Leo De Vries, SS Padres

At just 18 years old, San Diego Padres shortstop Leo De Vries has become one of the most promising talents in professional baseball. As of now, De Vries holds the third-highest ranking in the sport according to MLB Pipeline and is placed fifth on Baseball America’s (BA) Top 100 Prospects list. Scouts believe he possesses solid abilities across all areas and is expected to continue playing shortstop throughout his career.

Picked up by the Padres in 2024, De Vries debuted in Bowman Chrome 2024 later that same year. In addition to being the highest-ranked international signee of 2024, he also ranked among the most sought-after prospects in Bowman Chrome. Right now, the demand for De Vries cards remains steady within the hobby market. Recently, standard autographed versions from Bowman Chrome have been fetching prices ranging from $100 to $150, with a rare gold-signed card limited to 50 copies recently selling for $2,000. For now, it appears very improbable that De Vries will be moved. Nevertheless, AJ Preller, who leads the Padres' baseball operations, is recognized for taking aggressive actions, making De Vries someone worth watching as the trade deadline nears. Should De Vries join a higher-profile franchise, it might further boost an already robust collector interest.

Joshua Gonzalez, OF Red Sox

Known as "The Password," Garcia has steadily climbed through the ranks within the Red Sox minor league system. As his performance has improved, he has also made an appearance on the top 100 prospects lists from Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, ranking 95th and 89th respectively. Recognized for his exceptional plate discipline and significant hitting power, Garcia has been close to making it to the major leagues over the last few weeks. However, due to the strong depth in the Red Sox' outfield, he continues to play in Triple-A.

Garcia joined the Red Sox in 2019 as an under-the-radar talent. Because of this, his first appearance in Bowman products didn’t occur until 2025, when he became one of the stronger second-tier prospects within the set. Regarding the collectibles market, Garcia’s standard Bowman Chrome autographs typically sell between $35 and $50, whereas limited edition ones like his blue auto can reach up to $150. Currently, the likelihood of Garcia being dealt is high due to the crowded Red Sox outfield. If he were to move to a different team, his value in the hobby could decrease; however, this impact may be balanced out if he advances to the majors and maintains his impressive performance from the minor leagues.

Justin Crawford, OF Phillies

The son of ex-major league outfielder Carl Crawford, Justin Crawford was selected by the Phillies with the 17th pick in the 2022 draft. Following an early struggle in his professional journey, Crawford regained his status as one of the premier prospects, showcasing his solid batting ability, exceptional speed, and outstanding fielding skills as a genuine center fielder for Philadelphia. He currently holds the 87th position on Baseball America's top 100 rankings and ranks 44th on MLB Pipeline's top 100 prospect list.

Even though he was selected in 2022, fans needed to look toward Bowman 2023 to see Crawford's entry into the collecting world. Despite experiencing a minor dip in popularity early on in his career, his standing within the hobby has since improved significantly as Crawford demonstrated the top-tier qualities that earned him a first-round draft selection. According to 130Point, Crawford's PSA 10 autographed cards have recently fetched prices ranging from $120 to $200. While Crawford appears unlikely to be moved, Philadelphia's director of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, is recognized for being proactive around this time of year; thus, similar to De Vries, he remains someone worth keeping an eye on as July 31 draws near.
