(NEXSTAR) — When it comes to the security of you and your loved ones, there's nothing quite like feeling reassured that your home is located in a 'secure area.' However, just what defines a 'safe neighborhood' precisely?
A new study from SmartAsset reviewed 360 distinct neighborhoods throughout the United States and analyzed various factors that most people would perceive as indicators of an insecure living environment, such as levels of violent crime, property crime, heavy alcohol consumption, and additional related aspects.
Lehi, Utah, topped the list with a population slightly more than 81,000 residents, situated just south of Salt Lake City. Lehi is the sole suburban area within the whole study where the proportion of adults engaging in excessive drinking fell under 10 percent. Additionally, it had a comparatively low rate of violent and property crimes per person.
Just beneath Lehi stood three suburban areas surrounding Washington, D.C.: Bethesda, Maryland; Great Falls, Virginia; and Rockville, Maryland. Notably, Great Falls had an exceptionally low rate of crime when measured against the national average, along with a comparatively small number of traffic-related fatalities.
Several regions in New Mexico were also included, with certain neighborhoods considered more secure than others.
Five suburban areas in New Mexico are listed as some of the most secure locations in the country.
According to the research, the most secure suburban area in New Mexico is Corrales, placing it at 143rd among the safest suburbs nationwide. The town experiences 0.0026 instances of violent crime per person, 0.0068 cases of property crime per individual, and 15.92 fatalities due to traffic accidents for every 100,000 residents. Approximately 18.15% of adults in this region report engaging in heavy alcohol consumption.
This is where the remaining New Mexico suburbs stand in the rankings:
- No. 143: Corrales
- No. 239 Bernalillo
- No. 272 Rio Rancho
- No. 335 Los Lunas
- No. 349 Belen
Regarding the opposite end of the scale, several suburbs were positioned near the bottom of the rankings due to various factors. Belen, which placed just 11 positions away from the last spot on the list, was identified as having the ninth highest rate of violent crime per person, according to the research.
Coming in last place in the ranking was Lumberton, North Carolina, which dropped because of its exceptionally large number of traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents, standing at 41.4 (the top figure on the list), as well as the second-most incidents of violent crime per person.
The second-to-last entry is Plymouth, Massachusetts, which, although experiencing a minimal number of traffic fatalities, reported over twice the rate of violent crimes per person compared to Lumberton, NC.
A peculiar neighborhood located close to the bottom of rankings is Scottsburg, Indiana, where no violent crimes were recorded, as per SmartAsset . However, Scottsburg ended up having the third-most traffic fatalities in the nation, which was the main factor causing the violence-free suburban area to rank at the lowest level.
