Driver Flees After Injuring Saratoga Springs Couple in Motorcycle Crash

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah ( ABC4 — A pair from Saratoga Springs was hurt yesterday when a truck driver collided with their motorcycle and then fled the scene.

Amber Sumison and her spouse, Kevin, halted their motorcycle at the crossroads of Pony Express Parkway and Mountain View. Barely had they stopped when a truck operator struck the rear of the bike while traveling approximately 40 mph.

The first impact sent Amber and Kevin crashing into the car ahead of them, resulting in both experiencing neck injuries along with some small bruises and cuts. The truck driver exited his vehicle at first and walked a short distance toward them before returning to his seat and driving away, passing through a red traffic signal.

Amber said to ABC4 that she was thankful it hadn't been worse, "I work with 911, so I receive these calls constantly, so I understand just how severe it could have been."

She further mentioned that although she acknowledges that accidents occur, Amber believed that departing without assessing Amber and her spouse's well-being was unacceptable. She stated, "Once you realize it was a hit-and-run, that frustration resurfaces as well, since you cannot fathom abandoning a person lying on the road."

What actions to take if involved in a hit-and-run incident

In Utah, every driver involved in an accident must come to a halt and share details with others. Not stopping or leaving the area could lead to various consequences. Lieutenant Cameron Roden states, "If there are injuries or fatalities, these consequences can be quite severe, so it's advisable to remain at the location, exchange information, and prevent additional fines."

Leaving the location after an accident involving injuries is considered a Class A misdemeanor, as stated by Utah Code 41-6a-401 In the event of severe physical harm or fatality, this constitutes a third-degree felony.

Saratoga Springs Police continue searching for the vehicle, which is reported to be a dark-colored Toyota Tundra, along with the driver.
