Chris Hayes: "I'm Trying to Stay Rational" on Epstein, But Calls Trump Allies "Weird" | Video

On Wednesday's episode of MSNBC's "All In," Chris Hayes told his viewers that he is striving to remain logical when discussing Jeffrey Epstein and the many enigmas and conspiracy theories surrounding his life and passing. However, according to Hayes, the issue lies with the Trump administration. He stated that they are acting strangely regarding these matters.

The origin of this idea came from a CBS report regarding the so-called "unfiltered footage" from Epstein's prison cell just before his 2019 death, which was officially ruled as a suicide at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. When the video was released three weeks ago, Trump administration representatives claimed it showed there was no suspicious element to his passing. At that point, Wired magazine found evidence suggesting the video had actually been altered, and now CBS News has identified "numerous contradictions" between the administration's statements and the footage, with officials "seeming to reach decisions based on the video that aren't clearly evident" when viewing it.

Hayes started talking about it by stating, "Each day brings up more inquiries regarding that Jeffrey Epstein jailcell footage which the Department of Justice and the FBI presented with much emphasis. 'See how open we are,' they claimed. They referred to it as the complete unedited security recording captured by the camera close to the child sexual abuse perpetrator's detention room the evening prior to his discovery deceased. It was their so-called 'Watch. Here's the clip.'"

Immediately, people observed that at least a minute was gone," Hayes added. "The reasoning provided by Attorney General Pam Bonnie wasn’t very convincing—she mentioned some sort of technical issue. Additionally, the FBI holds a copy of the video containing the lost segment. So what’s really happening here?... I simply want to begin by stating that my initial thought isn’t that they altered the recording and that he was killed inside his jail cell. I believe he likely took his own life. I’m attempting to remain logical about everything, but their behavior feels strange.

Hayes subsequently showed a video snippet featuring Attorney General Pam Bondi stating, "The footage wasn’t definitive, but the evidence leading up to it suggested he took his own life, and there was a one-minute segment that had been removed from the recording. According to the Bureau of Prisons, this happens annually—every night, they replace the video with an older version dating back to around 1999, which means the same minute goes missing each day. We’re trying to locate that specific video."

Later, Hayes addressed the segment's guest, Bulwark journalist Will Sommer, saying, "Now CBS claims there's a version of the complete video. So was she lying about that? Like, what? What's happening here?"

Given how much has happened with the Epstein matter, there are numerous unresolved questions, and the government’s efforts to wrap things up keep raising even more inquiries," Sommer stated. "At first, we were told here, 'the complete and unedited video,' as they put it, but now they’re claiming, as you mentioned, that she said something different — oh right, there's actually one minute missing, which we conveniently neglected to bring up at first. Now it turns out there's indeed a minute missing, plus the metadata indicates possibly three minutes gone, or perhaps the recording was altered somehow. There are many such problems, and the government doesn’t seem eager to provide answers.
