Cardinals' 1st-Round Pick Walter Nolen: Injury Recovery Update

GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals' defense has faced major setbacks during the off-season, as several key players from last year suffered season-ending injuries. Many members of the team have been affected by injuries throughout the training camp, including 2025 first-round selection Walter Nolen. The former Ole Miss Rebels defensive end missed the beginning of training camp because of an ongoing calf issue.

Nolen took part in the rookie mini camp and optional mini camp last month and seemed okay at the time. But after that, he suffered from a calf injury which has kept him out for the first week, leaving head coach Jonathan Gannon uncertain about whether he'll be ready for the opening game of the season. Nevertheless, Nolen recently spoke with the Arizona Republic regarding his recovery efforts and maintaining an optimistic attitude throughout the rehabilitation process.

Head coach of the Cardinals discussing the development of Nolen's injury:

I'm feeling quite good. All has been going smoothly. It feels somewhat like a fortunate situation. Perhaps this was what God intended for me, so I'll just go with the flow," Nolen stated. "Recovery helps bring many aspects to light, but each day presents a fresh journey, teaching new methods of caring for my body. Various actions I should undertake and others I should refrain from, along with understanding how to achieve success.

A 21-year-old athlete is taking things step by step to avoid letting this injury affect his mindset. He's eager to return to play, yet recognizes the dangers of coming back too soon. This sensible caution has led Nolen to refrain from setting a specific schedule, although there's a growing suspicion that he may sit out the entire training camp.

Arizona's defense boasts a mix of youthful energy and seasoned players who might still perform well even without Nolen. Still, having two consecutive first-round draft choices who have faced injury issues during training camp must be extremely frustrating for the Cardinals. The team and Nolen have no choice but to focus on recovery and remain hopeful, as the possibility of his return is uncertain.
