Boost Your Child's Health This Back-to-School Season

When considering preparing your child for the start of the school year, it's common to think about purchasing school materials or new outfits, yet focusing on preventative healthcare may slip your mind.

While preparing your children for their return to school, Dr. Michael Turco from Methodist Physicians Clinic emphasizes that preventative care should be your main focus.

"Fewer instances of illness-related absence from work, fewer days away from school, and less time for parents to be required to pick them up and remain at home to look after them or arrange childcare," stated Turco.

In order to ensure your children remain healthy, Turco suggests they require regular medical examinations similar to those for adults.

"Although they face different challenges, they are developing and evolving. Their requirements shift nearly as fast as their shoe sizes," stated Turco.

Turco states that immunizations are mandatory for children upon starting school and once they enter middle school, but you might also think about additional shots that are not required.

"I support ensuring that each child has the chance to avoid missing several weeks of school, so I suggest receiving the seasonal flu and COVID vaccines when necessary," stated Turco.

If your older children are participating in sports, don't overlook their physical examinations.

"It's a chance for us to assess that boy's capability to engage and say, 'Here's how you can do it securely, and this is what I suggest, and let's figure out a method to allow you to play while keeping you safe," stated Turco.

As you prepare to return to school, Turco mentions that you'll require some time to adapt to your new routine.

"If you wait until the last minute to alter your bedtime schedule or modify your habits, it can be quite challenging at first. Therefore, I recommend starting to practice your routines one or two weeks ahead of time so everyone is prepared right from the beginning," stated Turco.
