"Such heartbreaking losses serve as a reminder that responsible pet care involves properly containing pets and consulting a vet about aggressive behavior before incidents happen. It’s a tough topic to discuss since many people adore dogs—they’re often seen as part of the family," stated State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Dee Jones.

The CDC advises staying vigilant, maintaining a secure distance, understanding the dangers of rabies, and monitoring kids when they're near animals.

If a dog pushes you down, the CDC recommends rolling up into a ball, pulling your head in, and protecting your ears and neck with your hands.

Here are some safety recommendations from the CDC:

  • Do not prompt your dog to engage in aggressive or boisterous play. Avoid encouraging your canine companion to participate in rough or intense games. Refrain from promoting violent or energetic interactions with your dog. Don’t allow your dog to get involved in harsh or forceful play activities. It’s important not to stimulate your dog into engaging in combative or vigorous play.
  • Stay calm and avoid making sudden sounds; always refrain from running away from a dog.
  • Don't attempt to separate fighting dogs
  • Never let small kids interact with dogs unless an adult is watching them closely.
  • Always use a leash when in public areas
  • Avoid approaching a strange dog
  • If a strange dog comes near you, remain motionless, stay relaxed, and do not look directly into the dog's eyes. Speak firmly and loudly saying "no" or "go home," and position yourself so your side is toward the animal. Gradually bring your arms up to your neck with your elbows bent. Allow the dog to move past you or retreat slowly.
