2026 Hyundai Elantra N TCR Hits Canada—Challenging the Civic Type R

  • Hyundai is launching a limited-run model Hyundai is introducing an exclusive version Hyundai is unveiling a custom-designed variant Hyundai is offering a distinctive edition Hyundai is presenting a special variation Elantra N to commemorate the company's victories in the TCR series within Canada.
  • The Elantra N TCR Edition includes a large rear spoiler and enhanced braking system, and it can be obtained exclusively through custom orders.
  • The Elantra N TCR Edition has few obstacles preventing it from being available in the United States as well.

In 1983, Hyundai launched its initial sales in North America with the modest Pony—an engine producing 70 horsepower, featuring a four-door hatchback design. This approach wasn’t entirely novel; Honda had previously tested the Canadian market using the S600 in the 1960s, prior to introducing the N600 into the US, just like Mazda did with the rotor-engine R100. Although the American and Canadian vehicle markets share many similarities, occasionally car manufacturers try out smaller-scale introductions in Canada before expanding more broadly. Based on Hyundai Canada’s recent model, it appears that a performance-oriented limited edition might soon arrive in the southern region.

Known as the Elantra N TCR Edition, this model can be considered the equivalent of Porsche's 911 GT3 within Hyundai's lineup. Building upon the outstanding Elantra N, Hyundai has introduced lightweight alloy wheels and enhanced front braking systems using four-piston single-piece calipers. Additionally, it features an impressive large-adjustable swan-neck rear spoiler that serves as a signature element.

Within, the TCR features Alcantara accents, sky-blue seat belts, and various additional aesthetic improvements. Although it is offered in small numbers and requires special ordering, Hyundai Canada still gives you the option to choose between a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, along with four exterior color choices (two less than the regular Elantra N).

As an aside, the TCR Edition does not receive additional power compared to the standard Elantra N, meaning it still delivers 286 horsepower in overboost mode from a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. This amount is sufficient, and Hyundai’s N models are designed to ensure handling performance that enables drivers to maximize the potential of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Enhanced braking systems and improved aerodynamics should allow this variant of the Elantra to achieve quicker lap times.

Last month, Hyundai secured its fifth consecutive win in the TCR category at the Nurburgring 24-Hour event, taking both first and second places on the podium. This achievement involved Canadian racer Robert Wickens, a former DTM and IndyCar competitor who endured a severe accident at Pocono Raceway in 2018 but made a comeback to compete at the highest level of motorsport even though he is now paralyzed.

The initial version of the Hyundai Pony wasn't an impressive vehicle and ended up being a source of ridicule across the northern border, similar to how the Yugo was viewed in the U.S. Even with this uncertain beginning, Hyundai has evolved into a top-tier brand within both regions, as demonstrated by the release of the TCR Edition Elantra in Canada, which highlights the company's current level of assurance.

Costing roughly $3,500 more than the base Elantra N model, the TCR Edition appears to offer good value with real racing-inspired enhancements. There’s no obstacle preventing Hyundai's U.S. division from launching an equivalent version, particularly since these vehicles are available only through special orders, eliminating the need to persuade dealers to carry inventory. It's safe to say that Hyundai USA will closely monitor the sales success of the TCR Edition in Canada. Let's hope the U.S. market sees it soon. If not, then I guess we'll just have to deal with it.
