Lee Health: Sun Safety Tips – Protect Yourself with Easy UV Protection Hacks

Whether you like playing golf, sailing, tending to your garden, or simply unwinding at the beach Alternatively, just being outside requires taking precautions against sunlight. It is crucial for your well-being to shield yourself from the sun. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses significant dangers—and as July marks UV Safety Awareness Month, it's an ideal opportunity to reinforce the importance of sun protection.

Three forms of ultraviolet radiation exist: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Both UVA and UVB wavelengths pass through the atmospheric layer and may lead to lasting harm, such as early signs of skin aging, formation of fine lines, and a higher likelihood of developing skin cancer. In contrast, UVC rays are blocked by the planet's atmosphere and do not make their way to the ground.

As you take in nature, the Lee Health staff would like to remind you to:

  • Use a wide-range sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 to shield your skin. Sunscreen should still be applied even when skies are overcast, and remember to renew the application frequently, particularly following water activities or physical exertion. Headwear and attire designed for protection can provide additional defense against damaging solar radiation.
  • Shield your eyes using sunglasses that filter out 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. Extended time in sunlight may raise the chances of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, and certain types of eye cancer.
  • Adopt safe solar practices, like finding shelter from the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and make sure you drink enough water.

Here are some straightforward tips to keep you secure as you take advantage of everything South West Florida provides.
