Although he temporarily resumed preaching in mid-2024, his recovery progressed slowly. In a statement delivered by the college pastor of Grace Community Church Austin Duncan On June 15, 2025, MacArthur mentioned that he had "undergone a second treatment for his lungs" the prior month.

That process went well, and I'm now back at home," MacArthur stated in a release at the time. "The medical team is hopeful regarding my recovery, and I look forward to coming back to you once I've regained my energy.

MacArthur said, "I wished to express my affection for each one of you and my devotion to this church, understanding that my life and era are under the control of the Lord. I hope to return to church as quickly as possible."

Following an illness with pneumonia in July 2025, Patton stated, "We lay our beloved pastor before the magnificent Redeemer he has devotedly served throughout the years and who now waits for His ultimate instruction to remain in His company eternally."
